• 2022 c.s.i.p.g.action Holiday Give-Away Day #27

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Tue Dec 27 10:26:00 2022
The long promised last game. Yeah, I know I said I'd post this
yesterday. I forgot. So you get it today instead. ;-)

    -----------------------------------

    * Wandersong
    https://store.steampowered.com/app/530320/Wandersong/
"Wandersong" is a simplistic, cute adventure-platformer with light
puzzling. It's mostly a side-scrolling 'walking sim' where you guide a YY8PKspoony bard around a world meeting up with unlikely characters in
an epic but lighthearted quest to save the world. It's short and C592H
not very involved (and ever so Indie in its design); not a great game
but an interesting palette-cleanser K6GXW between more serious titles,
and thus an ideal way to round out this year's c.s.i.p.g.a give-away.
    Enjoy!

    -----------------------------------

And that really is it for this year's give-aways... at least from me.
I hope you all had fun with it, not only with the free games, but with
the daily give-away posts themselves (you might not have noticed, but
there was an ever-so subtle narrative about how a common holiday can
have an unexpectedly uncommon twist ending, told with the help of lots
of funny animals. But it was all very low-key so it may have slipped
    you by ;-)

My goal was to inspire people to post more often on Usenet, and boy
howdy did I succeed at that; you all were chatterboxes this month. I
doubt this trend will continue at that pace now that the flow of free
games has gone away, but maybe it's encouraged some of you to be a bit
more prolific with your posting, in which case: mission accomplished!

This year (patting-myself-on-the-back part of the post engaged) I gave
away 52 games that - were I stupid enough to pay full price for all of
them - would have amounted to more than $1,000 USD in value. Of those,
Ant claimed 17 of them, with the rest of you trailing far behind
(that's what you get for being slow and picky ;-). Lurkers were known
to have grabbed six games. 20 games remain unclaimed (at least, nobody
claimed them publicly, lurkers might have done what lurkers do)

But in order to give these games a second chance, I'll list the keys
that haven't been openly claimed below. No guarantee they'll still
work but here's one last opportunity for you to fill out your library
with games you don't want. Remember, nobody's last words were ever "I
had a big enough video game's library," so stock up before the end
    times are upon us ;-)

Thank you all for the many fun posts, and I hope everybody will have a
great new year. I don't know if I'll do this again next year, or if it
will be quite as excessive (I know I say this every year) but if it is
the last time, I think we can say we ended the tradition beautifully
(and if we didn't end the tradition this year, then it stands as a
challenge to be beat in upcoming give-aways ;-0

But for now, I'm going back to my usual posting schedule. I think I
(and all of you1) deserve the break. ;-)

I will pass on this one as I do not like the graphics at all and
walking sims suck anyway. I also am not a fan of short games.

Thank you Spalls for sharing all of those extra keys you had this
year. I don't think I would have even shared the one extra key I had
if it weren't for your year end giveaway as I don't believe it would
have even occurred to me to share it here otherwise.

Justisaur bravely takes one (or seven, as the case may be) for the

    very noble sacrifice ;-)

    The 'score' so far:
    Ant: 17
    Justisaur: 8
    Mike S: 4
    Zaghadka: 2
    JAB: 1
    rms: 1
(also, lurkers: 13... but they can't win no matter how many games
they claim. Them's the - completely made up - rules! ;-)

These games are still (potentially) available:

Nobody's gonna de-throne Ant, but second place is still (possibly) in contention. Mike S. could still swing up from behind, and Zaghdka
might force a tie. Will it happen? Who knows! But the tension is thick

I turned down many of Spalls games or I would have ended up with most
of them. I tried to limit myself to just RPGs and Strategy games.

I know you beat me at least twice. Zag beat me twice as well.

Finally, I was genuinely surprised at how many games Spalls had to
    share. I guess, I shouldn't be....because... Spalls... but I was. I
honestly found his list of games more interesting then what Epic was
    giving away.

I wonder how he gets so many!

It seems awful to say this, but we have the war in Ukraine to thank
for that. HumbleBundle did one of their "do it for the charity"
bundles earlier this year to help the people of Ukraine, and there
were /a lot/ of games in that bundle. About half the games went to me
or somebody in my immediate circle, but the rest? They got tagged for
    the 2022 give-away.

So those games made up the bulk of the games; a handful were spares I accumulated from other bundles, and a few I purchased specifically
(and cheaply) for the give-away in order to fit the narrative ;-)

But barring another massive charity bundle I wouldn't expect anything
quite so excessive next year. We all benefited from Putin's
intransigence this year, but I think we all agree that it's better to
have fewer games than similar disasters in the future.

    them. That is nuts.

    Same!!

341 here, but otherwise the same. That Epic has continued the
give-away program for so long that I've managed to accumulate that
many games really tells you how profitable Fortnite is.

I'm still surprised they keep doing it (the give-away program, I
mean). I fully expect them to announce an end to it in 2023 (because
that would seem the sensible thing to do) but who knows what will
happen. When you have that much money at your fingertips, sensibility
    isn't a necessity anymore.

Damn. That *was* a lot of games. I will thank you just for doing all the inventory work that must have taken.

Oh, the sacrifices I make, buying dozens of games for my own
    enjoyment. Truly, I am a saint. ;-)

More seriously, that was one of the better bundles Humble ran (at
least from a value perspective). But even when I was buying it, I knew
a good chunk of those were gonna end up in the give-away. Don't get me
wrong; the bulk of the games went into my library, but I knew a
more-than-usual number would end up in this year's give-away too.So it
was a triple-win; support for Ukraine, some games for me, and enough
extras to make the December give-away exciting.

If we're lucky, there will be another similar bundle, although
hopefully not in response to anything as disastrous as the Ukraine
invasion. But, you know, something like, "here's a 20 game bundle to
help out with some less immediate and less life-threatening issue."
(But even then, I sort of feel skeevy wishing that; who wants to
profit off of somebody else's misfortune?)

Still, as far as indexing went (and yes, I index; I'm the person with
the spreadsheet, remember?), the Ukraine bundle was a lightweight.
Now, the Itch.io charity bundles... /those/ are annoying to keep track
of. But the Ukraine bundle? I think I spent more time setting up the spreadsheet for the give-away itself (because /of course/ I created
another spreadsheet for that) than I did indexing the games I kept.
    ;-)

I've bought a couple. Outer Worlds as it was an exclusive at the time,
and something else because I had that $15 coupon they were giving away,
and paid in real money far less than it was going for. Might have been
    disco elysium? I don't remember.

I'm tempted with Saints Row as it appears to be an exclusive again,
but really, I can wait both for it to go to other platforms and drop in price considerably. I think it was already on sale on Epic for a considerable discount, so it's likely to go down more.
