Of course I have it! ;-) Well, I have it on GOG and not Steam but that
still counts. I'm not averse to having it on multiple platforms, but
Christmas is about sharing so rather than indulge my greed I'll give
others an opportunity to claim it.

Prior to its release, "Icewind Dale" was announced as being more of an action-RPG than its better-known sibling, "Baldurs Gate", doubtlessly
as a reaction to the success of "Diablo" and its clones. For a long
time I avoid the game because of this but when I finally broke down
and gave it a try, I realized that - while streamlined from"Baldurs
Gate", it leans far more heavily towards the classic end of the RPG
spectrum than it does towards the actionified newcomers.

It has an unfortunately slow start - being an AD&D game, you start as
1st level nobodies and your spellcasters are useless - but the game
really picks up after a few levels. It's definitely one of those
games you have to invest some time into before you starting seeing any
returns, but it's a quite satisfying experience by the end.

I haven't played "Icewind Dale" in years, largely because it -like so
many fantasy RPGs - is such a time sink. But it's really one of those
games I /want/ to play again... if I can find the time.

Yeah, I don't think of Diablo when I think of Icewind Dale but to each

Yeah, I don't think of Diablo when I think of Icewind Dale but to each

No, but that's how it was advertised at the time. Action-RPGs were all
the rage in that era, and traditional RPGs were seen as slow, clunky
dinosaurs that wouldn't sell. So a lot of the ad-copy and magazine
previews (arguably the same thing ;-) hyped up how "Icewind" was going
to be a much faster game, not all stodgy like "Baldurs Gate".

The reality was that "Icewind" was still very much more like "Baldurs
Gate" than Diablo, but its (slightly) faster-paced gameplay was an
attempt to attract the click-happy Diablo-crowd, and its original
portrayal in the media reflected this. Fortunately, I eventually gave
the game a try and found it wasn't so bad as I feared. But I was very
much turned off by the direction Bioware was (supposedly) headed by
    the original advertisements.

I do still have my original copy somewhere but like you it didn't grab
me in the way BG:1/2 or PS:T (I have the EE editions of all of them)
did. I think part of it was it felt a lot more combat focused, instead
of story, and that all the PC's were yours removed an element I like
    from CRPG's - interesting companions.
