• Free Games: "Saints Row 4" and "Wildcat Gun Machine"

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Dec 8 11:01:10 2022
Ant may be trying to one-up me with his "what are you playing NOW"
threads, but I still have the lead in the 'free games' threads. Point
of fact: it's Thursday, there are free games on Epic, and I'm
    announcing them first. ;-)

    This week we get:

    * Saints Row IV Re-Elected https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/saints-row-iv-re-elected

The Saints Row series is a love-it-or-hate-it franchise. It's
basically a wackier version of Grand Theft Auto, and Saints Row IV was
one of the wackiest, with everything from super-powers to
dubstep-guns, to aliens. It was never my cup of tea; on the one hand,
it was always a bit too over-the-top, while the gameplay remained
bogged down in traditional 'open world' nonsense. But I can't say it
wasn't a well-made game with its own unique character and - even if I
don't really want to play the games - I can't help but admire that.
The "Re-Elected" version includes all 25 DLC offered for the game,
    making this the complete version.

    * Wildcat Gun Machine https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/wildcat-gun-machine-c66c4e
An isometric shooter-slash-dungeon-looter. Lots of explosions and
cartoon gore, visually it looks like it was inspired by the "Kings of
Power 4 Billion Percent" cartoon. It also looks like it would get
repetitive fairly quickly, but then I'm not really the audience for
this sort of game (I'm old and boring and whine when games don't have
such inconsequentials as 'character' or 'narrative' or 'pacing'). But
if you like shooting things - shooting A LOT of things - this will
    probably scratch that itch.

Epic is /supposedly/ going to be doing a Christmas give-away thing,
but no sign of that yet. Until then, you have a week to claim these
games, as usual. So get claiming!

I thought I'd enjoy it but went meh after a while. The superpower
progression seemed slow and I think that was pretty much all this had
going for it. But maybe a second look is in order.

Also, a note: people who had Saints Row IV have been updated to this "Re-Elected" version on December 8, on Steam at least. Other than the
free DLC, there's apparently now also cross play between PC launchers, I
guess that means Epic and Steam.

    * Wildcat Gun Machine https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/wildcat-gun-machine-c66c4e
    An isometric shooter-slash-dungeon-looter.

Looks good enough for a spin. I grabbed Epic's SR4 too. I mean, a bigger
game collection is better and more is more...

I was going to run out and get it on Epic (well I guess I still should.) I didn't
know they gave you all the DLCs on Steam. I had it and Gat out of Hell which was a lot better than the base game and worth a whirl.

I mainly liked SR IV the base game because it reminded me of playing
City of Heroes. But I can play City of Heroes again, and yeah the base
game was just o.k. I did finish it.

I'll give it a try too, downloading now

Oh, that's what that update was about. Oh, and guess what it doesn't
work after the patch. Probably for the same reason why the remastered
Saints Row III doesn't work on my PC, because my CPU is too old.

Oh, well, no worries, I also have this game on GOG.com... except it's
now the Re-Elected version there too and there are no old installers
    to download.

Hmm... people in Steam reviews are mad about the game now using Epic
Online Services for crossplay support. Personally I wouldn't care,
but maybe that's the reason why it doesn't work. There's some legacy
version "beta" I can opt into, but that doesn't work either.

Looks like the reason why it doesn't work on my PC is because it requires XINPUT1_4.dll, and you need Windows 8 or later for that.

Meh. One play. I don't like the mouse aiming in isometric, it feels clunky. The graphics are uninspired and dumb looking (chibi head character)

I'd rather play llamatron again even with only a keyboard.

Well I have the third one (damn you Steam sales) but I can't say it
really grabbed me then again the only GTA I can say I really liked was
    number 2.

I wish I could get 2 to try it out, not that I've looked real hard, just checked out steam and gog. I've tried 1 but it was a bit too hard
and primitive. 3 VC is my favorite, 100% it. 3 was my first and
have to put it next, though I was irritated I played through 2x
and got a bug that I couldn't 100% it both stuck at 99%. SA was
my next favorite, the gang progress was fun, but too short. I like
the characters in 5 best, but never finished it as it seemed too
hard to make money and it was tied to online somehow. I still put
it next, and then 4 last, well before 1 so not quite last. I did
finish 4, but I had a lot of trouble running it and missed the cool
side missions from 3 too much.

And this is why I've never given this franchise a second thought, just
like GTA: I have zero interest in this formula; it's also kept me from the

I finally got around to trying this. I didn't like the controls,
especially movement with a keyboard although aiming was fine. With a
controller aiming was too sensitive and I didn't see any option to
adjust that. So, no. Kinda liked the rocking music but a rocking game experience it wasn't.
