• Free Games: "Fort Triumph" and "RPG In A Box"

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Dec 1 11:04:10 2022
Thursday. Epic. Games. You know what it's all about. So let's not beat
around the bush and just get to the part where I tell you what and
    where the games are available.

    *Fort Triumph
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/fort-triumph
I know nothing about this game, so I'm going to start by quoting what
it says on the store page: "A strategy game combining the turn-based
combat of XCOM with the world exploration of HOMM. Build towns,
collect artifacts, improve your heroes, and influence your tactical surroundings using physics!". The visuals look very Warcraft III in
appearance, which isn't necessarily bad but makes the game feel dated
from the start. Based on the trailers, the combat seems less engaging
than XCom's white-knuckle fights, and the overland 4X strategy seem
equally shallow. It almost feels like a mobile game. Might be good,
but nothing I'd rush to play.

    * RPG in a Box
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/rpg-in-a-box
What it says on the tin. It's a game-builder with Minecraft-like
visuals that lets you create your own RPGs, from the monsters to the
levels to the quests to the combat mechanics. You're not going to end
up with anything like Skyrim but I can see having fun with this. But
it's fairly niche; you have to be the sort interested in fantasy RPGs
/and/ want to build your own game /and/ not be turned off by the
visual style. But the reviews are good and it's supposedly easy to
work. Sure, I'll take it. But I'll quite understand if others let it
    pass them by

7 days to claim, as usual. And unlike certain cheap-ass Usenet
posters, more than one person can take the game. Enjoy! ;-)

I think the target demographic for that one are people who are really
into Minecraft and want to specifically make an RPG without having to do
    this in Minecraft.
Which means it's most likely intended for younger audiences.

Is Minecraft still mostly kids? Last time I checked, the younger set
had checked out - mostly to RoBlox - and all that were left were
    Minecraft grognards and streamers.

Mind you, I'm not arguing with your thesis; you're probably right that
this game is supposed to compete in that market. I just think it's
target of comparison is probably more RoBlox than Minecraft.

I know old fart friends who play it in their 40s and 50s!

I don't think one can say that nobody older plays it, but the
demographic that plays it seems to skew younger.
