• Any decent paid games for an iPad (Pro)?

From PW@21:1/5 to All on Mon Nov 21 21:09:22 2022
    Hi,

I think I remember some here saying they were playing games on an iPad
    in Spalls thread.

I say paid, because I do not want ads and spyware on my new iPad.

My wife used to play Words With Friends but I am not interested in
games like that. Besides, I think I read it is spyware.

That was probably me. So if you putting aside the ad supported games
that's about 90% of the games gone. Moving onwards, it's a bit tricky to
answer as you really need to say what you're looking for in a game. I've
bought a few and a lot of them are choose you own adventure type games
with Overboard, To Be and 80 Days as some standouts. The last one I got
was Plague Inc. as who doesn't want to wipe out the human population.

My suggestion though is just have a google for some top iPad game lists
    and go from there.

Well I haven't gotten back to this title as yet, but Deus Ex Go I found relaxing and enjoyable on my ipad. Also consider Hitman Go & Lara Croft Go.
I bought Planescape Torment on ipad as well, haven't tried it yet tho!

I have a bunch of paid apps on my iPad. Unfortunately, most of them
were purchased years ago, which means a) I don't know if they're still available on the store, b) I don't know if they run on modern iPads,
and c) they almost certainly don't take advantage of all the newest bells-n-whistles of the latest devices.

Still, "Starbase Orion" and "Civilization: Revolution" are excellent
strategy games, "Smash Hit" is a fun arcade game where you get to
smash all sorts of glass panels, the "Lost Treasures of Infocom" hurts
my brain in a pleasant way, and "Solebon Solitaire" (the ad-free
version) lets me Freecell to my heart's content.

I haven't purchased any new games for the iPad just because a) I
already have more than I really want (those I listed are just a few
    that I keep on-device) and b) I don't really enjoy playing on a mobile
devices anyway. I'm never going to be a fan of touch-screen controls,
and carrying around a controller seems contrary to the purpose. So
these days I mostly just use the tablets for media consumption
(reading, mostly), and save the gaming for the big screen.

I finished Lara Croft Go last year or so. It was fun! I have Hitman Go,
but haven't started. Also, this is in my iPhones.

Thanks. I guess there are only mainstream, brain dead, Tik Tok like
    games available for this device.

It supposedly has an HD high-rez display. Just wanted to try it out.

I have a couple games for my (formerly Kindle) on my Fire that look
nice such as a Sonic one but I guess I should limit what I install on
the iPad. I bought the 512 Gig model.

I am using the iPad for other things.

My 11" Fire has a micro-SD slot that I can install lots of music on
and also apps. It has a a great display and I have a few books that I
    read on it.

I guess Apple doesn't offer something like that because of greed,
    etc...

    Thanks JAB!

Just looking for something in case I have to get my tires rotaded and

I saw that there is Civ6 but I have had that installed for years on my

The Monkey Islands, all the RPGs from Spiderweb Software instantly come
to my mind. Especially the Spiderweb games shine on a tablet, due to the
form factor and the relaxed round based rpg play style.
They are good rpgs as well, in the vein of the old Ultimas and Fallouts.

Jeff Vogel's RPGs. I keep meaning to try one of these games. I love

There are quite a number of ports of good PC games to the iPad.
"Doom", "Max Payne", "Prince of Persia Warrior Within", "Star Wars
Knights of the Old Republic", "XCom", "Need for Speed Undercover",
"Assassins Creed China", "Mirror's Edge", "Another World",
"Minecraft", "Beneath a Steel Sky", "Resident Evil 4", "Mass

sure there are newer games too (I stopped expanding my iPad game
collection some years ago be). I mean, Epic's "Fortnite" is on the
iPad and that's one of the most popular games in the world now. It's
not really a challenge to find PC-quality games in the Apple mobile
    ecoystem.

But - at least in my experience - it's not really fun to play those
games on those devices either. You're either using touchpad controls,
or lugging around a controller. It's just not a platform that's really
designed for long-form games where you stare at the screen for hours
on end; it's better suited to quickie mobile-game experiences (e.g., "Bejeweled" or "Angry Birds" or any game where a match takes two or
three minutes and you usually don't play more than two or three
    matches at a time).

I love my tablets, I really do... but they're best suited as
media-consumption devices rather than something requiring any
significant user interaction, whether it's typing out a document,
creating art, or playing a game of any complexity. Sure, you /can/ do
all those things... but tablets are a tool ill-suited to those tasks
and you're much better off using a desktop or laptop.

I tend to agree. I have, for example, a couple of games (Sunless Sea and Invisible Inc.) that I enjoyed on the PC so I bought them on the iPad.
The problem is even though both games are well suited to the iPad,
indeed I think using a touchscreen is actually better, I found that I
just couldn't get into them and stopped playing within ten or fifteen
minutes. I think a lot of out is when you out and about there's just to
many distractions that means I can't focus on playing the game. The
games I do play, very casual ones like match three style ones or
sometimes a game or backgammon or cribbage. You can fire it idle away
ten minutes and then do something else.

Like you though I do love my iPad but for media consumption not playing
games. Even that has it's limits though as I find it difficult to read a digital version of a book whereas a physical copy I don't. That has a
caveat though of choose you own adventure style games work even better
in a digital format than a physical one.

Well, I'm sure that the publishers will release a patch to ensure that
the games can run in offline mode before they pull the plug on the
servers. Because otherwise they'd be essentially stealing back those
games from everybody that bought them, and I'm sure that neither the
law nor the gamers would take that sitting down.

    Right?

    RIGHT?!?!?

The only paid games I played on iOS were ages ago, and I know for a
fact most of them are gone/don't work any more. There is one though
    ancient, but still available:

    * Solomon's Keep

There's the Lite version which is a free demo to try.

I'll tell you good games that are free that the microtransactions
    aren't excessive or necessarily required:

    Fantasy RPGs:
    * Knights of Pen and Paper 2 F2P (I'll note that Knight of Pen and
Paper is $5 and pretty good, and doesn't have the microtransactions, so
does qualify, though I played it on the PC.)
    * Buriedbornes (yes it's spelled that way, not sure what it means, it's Japanese and has some translation problems but well worth going through)
    * Soda Dungeon

    Other:
    * Fallout Shelter
    * Space Pioneer (sort of planet explorer diablo like game)
    * Random Dice (odd dice game, fun though)

Baldur's Gate I and II, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale are all
    available on IOS too.

Strategy, adventure and turn-based RPGs are probably the best PC games
to play on a tablet, since they're slow enough that the controls
aren't a major disadvantage. It's bad enough that the controls are
inaccurate and lack any feedback, but when the is doing double-duty
both as controller and as display, action games become exceptionally
    irksome to play.

But with slower games, you can just lift your hands from the controls
long enough to see what's going on without fearing that you've doomed
your on-screen avatar to a sudden death. ;-)

But with slower games, you can just lift your hands from the controls
long enough to see what's going on without fearing that you've doomed
your on-screen avatar to a sudden death. ;-)

Balder's Gate Enhanced Edition looks good.

Now I am ready for my next oil change :-)

I hope I don't have to travel anytime soon!

The only paid games I played on iOS were ages ago, and I know for a
fact most of them are gone/don't work any more. There is one though
    ancient, but still available:

    * Solomon's Keep

    * Buriedbornes (yes it's spelled that way, not sure what it means, it's >Japanese and has some translation problems but well worth going through)
    * Soda Dungeon

    Other:
    * Fallout Shelter
    * Space Pioneer (sort of planet explorer diablo like game)
    * Random Dice (odd dice game, fun though)

I installed Fallout Shetler. Just messed around with it for a couple

    Also:

Baldur's Gate I and II, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale are all available on IOS too.

But isn't that the point of the games?! (At least from some developer POV.)

I actually enjoyed "Fallout Shelter". I certainly had more fun with it
as a mobile game than I did when it eventually transition to the PC
platform. It kept me busy for a goodly number of commutes (and
possibly more than a few business meetings, not that I'm admitting to
    anything ;-)

It's strengths are it's a cute, colorful game with an easy to
understand progression system. It's paced slow enough that the
touch-screen controls aren't a major concern. It's gameplay is easily
divided into two or three minute chunks. It's well designed around the limitations and usage patterns of the platform.

It is, undeniably, a very simple and unsophisticated game. It isn't
the sort of game that you spend hours at a time playing. It's not the
sort of game you give any thought to even ten seconds after you put
down the phone/tablet. It's absolutely disposable. Perfect for mobile.

Compare this to something like "Baldurs Gate", or even "SimCity" (also available on iOS, incidentally). Can you imagine playing either game
in two minute increments spread out over several weeks or months? Gone
are any hopes of engaging with the story; the mechanics of the games
don't fare much better either. (I'm trying to imagine trying to solve
SimCity traffic issues when my gameplay time is limited to however
long it takes for the elevator to get me to my floor, or even in the
few minutes for my latte to arrive. ;-). Even if they technically can
run on the hardware PC games aren't a good fit for mobile because they
demand a much larger investment of uninterrupted time than you're
usually going to give to your phone.

"Angry Birds", on the other, is perfect for the task.

There are some old games that I loved that I think would be great for
a touch screen like the iPad:

Qix and Tempest come to mind. And some of the old Atari games. Maybe
    even Robotron.

    Maybe even Donkey Kong.
