- The Good News -
Bungie is making another game based on the "Marathon" IP.*
Is it good news? I suppose that depends on how you feel about the
original games. I never was that impressed with "Marathon" series, but
my first encounter with them was back when it was still a Mac-only
title, and - as I've never enjoyed using Macs - that certainly
influenced my opinion of the games. But even at the time, the games
felt a bit old hat, with its maze-like corridors and keycard hunts
becoming passe on PC. It probably didn't help that I played it on an underpowered Mac so the whole experience was sluggish and with a
painfully low-FPS (and if you knew how forgiving I am of low FPS,
you'd understand just how bad that had to be). And later - when I
played it on the PC as "Aleph One" - it felt so behind the times that
I had a hard time seeing what the excitement was about.
But on the other hand...
I'm happy to see Bungie doing anything that's not either Halo or
Destiny related. They're a talented studio, and seeing them stuck
behind those two IPs for decades has been disheartening. And maybe -
if they are returning to old IPs - one day we might even see them
return to the Myth franchise? We can only hope. So even if I'm not
excited in the particulars about a new Marathon game, I view this as
positive news.
- The Bad News -
It's going to be a multiplayer-only 'extraction based shooter', with
three man teams and loot, possibly with season passes.
Which, I guess, is fine if you're into that sort of thing... except
one of the strengths of the "Marathon" franchise was its lore, and
discovering the setting's background as you explored the game world.
That's something better used in single-player games then in fast-paced
online matches. Coupling the "Marathon" IP with an online-only game
seems more about the marketing opportunity (because nostalgia sells!)
rather than expanding the universe. I'm not sure this is the sort of
game the fans have been waiting for all these years.
Well, however it goes, we'll have a while to find out. The game is
still in early pre-alpha (which is code for the 'hey, wouldn't this be
neat?' phase of development) so changes aren't only likely, they're
expected.
