Knee deep in the dead, if you choose a random game on Steam it will
be an amateur job. I'd like some place where I can choose a genre and
a game and be guaranteed a certain level of sophistication.

Do a search for a keyword, sort by user reviews.
You could also look here at games people here thought were the best of say 2010s.

I thought we'd done game of the year threads too, but can't find them.

Do a search for a keyword, sort by user reviews.Or just time-travel back to 1999. What a year for games. You all have time-machines in the back of your shed, right?
You could also look here at games people here thought were the best of say 2010s.Alternately, you could say, "hey, I like games like "X" and "Y", what

do you think I should play next?" and I'm sure you'd get some
responses. Not that I'm saying there are any opinionated people in
this newsgroup... ;-)
I thought we'd done game of the year threads too, but can't find them.We didn't do one for 2021. I can't say for 2020, since I was on a
usenet sabbatical. We had a "best games of the decade" in 2019. The
last "best game of the year" was in 2018, and even then it was "new to
you", not "new to 2018" ;-)
None of which is really that surprising because:
a) I think by and large the regulars of this group are becoming less interested in playing new releases, and
b) we're all such cheap bastards that we just wait until the game
shows up free on Epic (or wherever) before we play them, which means
the games are usually a year or two old at that point ;-). "Best game
of 2022? Ask me in 2025!" :)
Although I suspect if we did a "best game of 2022" thread, "Elden
Ring" would win hands down... if only because it seems to be the one new-to-2022 game a lot of people here have played (and enjoyed).
