• Free Games: "Rising Hell" & "Slain: Back From Hell"

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Oct 6 11:00:59 2022
Epic! Thursday! Free! You know what do!
    (why me talk caveman?)

    This week:

    Rising Hell
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/rising-hell-253707

    This one's a retro-styled platformer / rogue-lite, which is a bit of a
mouthful if it's nothing else. The visuals are surprisingly colorful
and the reviews are good, but the none of the above combination -
retro or platformer or rogue-lite - are of particular interest to me.

    Slain: Back From Hell
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/slain-aea303

Aaaaand... it's another retro-themed platformer. It looks very Castlevania-esque and overall I like the look of this one more; the
sprites are bigger and more detailed, and the gameplay looks less
hyperactive. Still, I'm no more excited about this game than the other
one. Is it really too much to ask for games where the pixels /aren't/
the size of my thumb? ;-)

So... a couple of good (if small) games this week; I'm just not sure
they're for me. Well, I have a week to decide... And so do you! Then
the cycle repeats. What a time to be alive, eh?

I took them too in case I get bored if ever. :P

Yes it is. Especially since you are the one collecting house size
monitors off the curb that make IMAX pixels thumb sized. :P

    Touché ;-)

(it's been an uneventful couple of weeks, btw; no new monitors, no new computers, no "new" nothin'. But I did finally make that run to the
e-waste depository to get rid of all the old gear so - if and when the
stuff does start appearing - I have room again ;-)

They look very similar to each other but I am guessing I am going to
like Rising Hell more if I like them at all.

    Thanks Spalls.

Given the common "hell" motif between them I am assuming it's all a
Halloween thing because, you know, October. We'll see if they keep it
up next month or if it's just a coincidence.

(Suddenly I imagine Epic pushing "Doom" to customers, which - given
the rivalry between Epic and Id - seems quite ironic in a Morissette
    sort of way ;-)

    Thanks Spalls.
No, thanks Epic. My curbside scroungings may have saved me a few
pennies by not having to buy a new TV, but even so it's not enough to
    fund a give-away this size ;-)

I picked them up. I'm not very into platformers, but two of my favorite
indy 8-bit rogue-likes are platformers, so I'll give them a try.

Doom 3 is on sale $4 there. :P
