• Too many games I want to play! - Vampire Survivors

From Justisaur@21:1/5 to All on Fri Sep 16 08:39:16 2022
Who'd've thunk it would happen? I've rarely hit this spot, maybe once
or twice in the last decade, and pretty much never before, especially
of ones I could afford to buy, and never more than one I actually did
    buy.

I bought and got sucked into Vampire Survivors - a top down sprite
bullet hell, find unlocks and have them next time after you die (i.e.
what they call rogue-lite) game. I suppose it would be best compared
to Robotron. It's not really bullet hell though as the monsters don't
shoot bullets until much later and your weapons can break the bullets,
I've never been killed by bullets so far, but many a time by monsters
touching my character. The levels are maximum 30 minutes, and I'm at
the point I can usually get through them with some luck, so it sure
does take a long time. The other thing is this game is early access
which I never buy, but it was cheap, only $3 and it had overwhelmingly
good reviews, 99% Steam, and it struck my fancy. Varied characters and
weapon unlocks, which are still semi random to pick up during the game
and synergies between weapons and buffs make it very repayable. I
initially found at near the 30 minute mark my screen turned into a
slideshow, it appears to be maxing out my CPU. I did find 'performance
mode' and turning off damage numbers and flashing when monsters are hit
in the settings though and it's been smooth since, I didn't notice any difference in appearance, but it's pretty low res anyway, so not much
    to loose I guess.

Yes this was mostly an excuse to talk about the latest game I'm
playing. I was also thinking about Mech games, and how I'd never
played the DLCs of EDF 5, one of my favorite semi-recent games, so I
bought the two mission DLCs (the weapon unlocks 'DLC' are low level
good for the very start only which I'm way beyond, and widely panned as
being a waste of money and far too much money at around $3 a piece, so
I didn't buy those.) I also had Hades on my wishlist, and been watching
for a price drop, I almost bought it full price, but managed to wait.
It has high praise everywhere, and similar very high ratings on Steam,
and I remember someone mentioned liking it here, so I bought that too
while it was on sale. I now want to play both those, but I'm pretty
    wrapped up in Vampire Survivors.

Cute ascii art Justisaur! My more dramatic than the trout (but looks
like a carp - hey, limited characters to work with!) ><{{{{;>

I uninstalled Vampire Survivors a while ago. I just didn "get" it.
Didn't know what the point is/was. I figured if Rin recommended it
then it must be something I would like. Now you, my Elden Ring and
Dark Souls 3 guy, are saying you are loving it. And the user reviews
    at Steam too.

So, I am going to reinstall it. Not sure what to do. It seemed very monotonous.

Survive, get gold. It starts out a bit slow, but that seems good as it
gives you an opportunity to get used to the game, you unlock stuff
and get better at picking the better weapons and and figuring out
how to combine them. Eventually you'll unlock Hyper mode which
    goes much faster.

If you want hints ask, though there seems to be a lot more to
    understand than I know yet.

You can look at the unlocks page in game to see what you need to
do to unlock things to give you a goal beyond surviving.

It does get monotonous at points, but it picks up again before
long. It may be a better game to pick up and play a run when
you have about 40 minutes to get through. At least you can hit
esc to pause. I may put it down to play something else and
just play it when I have a time frame about right for it.

It's an addictive little game, I found myself going back to it, and
the addictive nature caught me by surprise... a lot of old school
games had that magic, but it seems to be kind of a lost art.

I wrote about it here a few months back.

It is a good example of how games can just come out of nowhere and be
big hits. My understanding is the person who developed it only really
intended it to be a fun little game for him and his friends to play and
it's now sold millions of copies. Not bad work if you can get it!
