• Not Free Games: Humble Choice 2022-09

    From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Tue Sep 6 13:59:53 2022
    Not free, but cheap.

    And it looks like a good selection this month too.

    * Crusader Kings III
    The classic strategy game. It doesn't include any of the (many many)
    DLC packs but even the base game is a fine addition to any gamer's
    library. I'll take it, yes please!

    * Just Cause 4 Complete Edition
    I admit, I sort of burned out on the Just Cause games after the second
    one, and this fourth game isn't the best of the series, but it's still
    a good game, and - as a completionist - I'm happy to add number 4 to
    my collection.

    * Descenders
    My days of recklessly riding a bicycle across rough terrain are long
    past (take care of your knees, kids!) so this virtual recreation is
    the closest I'm gonna get. I don't really care for the stunts or
    racing aspect of the game; I just like whizzing down the hills and
    slaloming through the trees.

    * Industria
    A first-person shooter set in (end-of-) cold-war Berlin; looks neat. I
    get vibes of "Singularity", "Syberia" and "You Are Empty"; an odd
    combination that seems unusual enough to work. I'll take it!

    * Forgive Me Father
    Another Indie FPS, this one with a horror theme and cell-shaded
    visuals. It looks okay, although far more interested in its mechanics
    than its narrative.

    * Shapez (& Puzzle DLC)
    A puzzle game, sort of a cross between "Satisfactory" and "Mini
    Metro". These sort of games usually don't keep me engaged for very
    long - solving puzzles simple for the sake of saying I've done so
    isn't very entertaining to me - but I'll give it a look.

    * Crown Trick
    An Indie top-down action-RPG with cutesie graphics. Well, it got good
    reviews so I'll assume it's a fine game, but it's not really something
    I'm interested in. Still, it's not jank and that's a refreshing
    change.

    * Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos
    Ditto.

    So... one "great", three "good", two "fine", and two "fine but not for
    me", and zero bad or awful games. That's a good haul. I was starting
    to wonder about maintaining my HumbleChoice subscription but this
    month has convinced me to keep it for at least a little longer.

    This is the only one that looks mildly interesting, Silly turn based RPG... but I'm
    rarely into turn based anymore, and none of the silly they show in the clip on Steam even made me smile, so it's a pass. They want $35 for this on Steam which seems way out of range for this type of game.

    There's even CK:II which is free on Steam.

    And as we are talking about free games, one I don't think that's been
    mentioned before is Battle for Wesnoth on Steam.

    Oooh, is it really?
    (Rushes off to check, clicks 'add to library')
    I remember having a lot of fun with that one, in the long-ago. Good
    catch; thanks for the heads up!

    I wonder what other classic open-source 'clone' games are available on
    Steam...

    OpenTTD? Check. (added)
    FreeCiv? No
    FlightGear? No,
    XConq? No. I'm starting to sense a pattern
    The Ur-Quan Masters? No.
    Tremulous? No.
    Free Orion? No.
    OpenRCT? No. There's definitely a pattern though.
    OpenSC2K? No.
    Frets on Fire? No... but there is "Fret Smasher" which may be related

    Well... that was disappointing. Still, I got a free game outta my
    search so not a total loss.
