And you thought Redneck Rampage was bad?
Am I the only one who enjoyed "Redneck Rampage"?
Yes, it was an immensely stupid game.
Yes, it suffered from some serious gameplay issues (uneven balance,
too-large, too maze-like levels).
Yes, it was immature and offensive title.
But...It has a great soundtrack.
But...It had - for its time - very impressive visuals; with both SVGA
and better quality models and textures than we'd seen before
But...Its level design - although poor for actual gameplay - was
impressive in its attempt to create a 'realistic' world. It wasn't the
first game to attempt this, but it was a far cry from the generic
mazes of earlier Doom-clones. The levels were quite large too.
But...It had co-op support with two unique, voiced characters.
But...it's irreverent humor - later a hallmark of 90s and early 2000s
games - was still fresh and novel at the time of the game's release.
"Redneck Rampage" was a flawed title undoubtedly, but when it was new
it was something of a marvel; maybe frustrating to play but an
exciting herald as to what games-of-the-future might be like. Too
often it's judged by modern standards rather than remembering the era
in which it was developed.
Now... "Immortal Redneck"? I'm less sanguine about that one, if only
because procedurally generated maps tend not to be as interesting as
hand-made levels, and it lacks any real character or atmosphere. It's
an arena-shooter with classes/skills whereas I prefer a simpler and
slower paced style. It's got good reviews, but it's not the sort of
game of which I am a fan.
I added it to my GOG library, though. Free is free, after all.
