    Submerged looks really pretty.

Well, Ant beat me when it came to remind everybody about "Mafia" /and/
he started the monthly 'What Have You Been Playing' thread before I
could... but at least there's always the weekly Epic freebies and no,
of course, he got here first too.

    ANT!!!!!!!!!!

<an impressive amount of fist shaking ensues>

    Anyway...

"Submerged: Hidden Depths" is the sequel to the 2015 "Submerged". I
    enjoyed the previous game, but it was extremely limited in scope;
there was little variety in its gameplay, less challenge, and it too
closely followed the "Indie game puts young children in danger" trope
to feel novel. Still, for a cheapo four-hour-long game, it wasn't too
bad, so a part of me is intrigued by the sequel.

Unfortunately, what I read about it is that it's more of the same and
while that isn't necessarily bad, I'm not sure there's enough content
    - both in terms of gameplay mechanics and story - to carry me through
a second chapter. I'm willing to give it a try but I think I'm going
to tire of this game long before I near its end.

    Still... it's free, right?

Meanwhile... "Shadow of the Tomb Raider". Epic already gave this one
away for free last December, didn't they?

Which one was that again? I always get the Tomb Raider games confused.
Oh, right; it's the third game of the third series. Not a bad game -
arguably the best in terms of gameplay as far as the rebooted reboots
go - but I still preferred the second game (probably because I prefer
snow to jungles). "Shadow" also dug in hard on the whole crafting
aspect too, if I'm remembering correctly; I really could have done
without that aspect of the game. Not a terrible game though, and if
you enjoy the Tomb Raider franchise you'll probably like this one. But
it's not a breathtaking experience either.

But I don't care if it's rude and childish; I'm not thanking Ant for
the reminder about the games. ;-)

I've held off on "Far Cry 6", despite owning all the rest of the
series. In part, it's because of my usual discomfiture at paying
full-price for games (less an issue now that "Far Cry 6" is dropping
in price, of course). In part, it is also because I am sort of burned
out on the sameness of Ubisoft's open-world games.

But mostly its because what I've read about "Far Cry 6" just doesn't
appeal to me. It seems a much whackier take on the series, with
magical 'Supremo' backpacks and weapons that shoot things like CDs.
You have semi-sentient animal companions, which sort of made sense in
the semi-magical world of "Far Cry Primal" but feels oddly out of
place in the supposedly realistic setting of pseudo-Cuba. It adds the 'leveling' system from the newer Assassins Creed, where enemies are inexplicably more powerful in certain regions (so where a 1st level
human guard can take only one shotgun blast to the face, a 10th level
guard can take six blasts from the same weapon).

(And I know, it seems a bit hypocritical of me to complain about all
these new things being added when another of my complaints is about
how 'samey' all of the Far Cry games feel... except it's not that I
don't like change, it is just that I don't like the specific
implementations used. There are some other features added to "Far Cry
6" that are less offensive, such as its ability to construct guerrilla
bases. A lot of its core mechanics remain identical to earlier games
too, especially the central game loop of find base/destroy base, and
    the endless collectible hunting.)

Plus, "Far Cry 6" is only on Epic (and UPlay), and I'm not inclined to
give either of those companies my credit-card number. If I get it,
I'll wait until it's on Steam.

Weird stuff is my jam! You guys are making me want it now. On the
other hand it sounds sort of Fortnighty throw in the kitchen sink
for no reason, which turns me off, and It is on Epic/Uplay which
are both minor turn offs. And there's still the whole gammut
of Far Cries I've never tried besides Primal and that Dragon one.

Wow Spalls. That is some weird stuff to have in a game. I doubt I
would take it even if it was free. Then there is always the issue of
    hard drive space too!

I mean, it's not really any weirder than opening a portal to hell and
expecting one guy to single-handedly fight off the an entire
dimension's demonic hordes. That game even has a magical grappling
hook with a grappling hook (how does that work? Where's the wire
spool? What's powering the winch? And am I overthinking things?)

But the "Far Cry" series (barring the first) is nominally set in a
'real world' environment, but with every iteration it has inched
further into fantasy and hyperbole. It usually disguised its most
extreme moments as drug-fueled hallucinations (although that trick was
starting to get very old by FC5), but with "Far Cry 6" it basically
abandoned all pretext and put the wacky front-and-center.

There's nothing wrong with this; as I said, other games have gone much
further than "Far Cry". I just don't think it's an enjoyable mix. My
primary complaint with the "Far Cry" series was always how samey the
games felt, but my second issue with the franchise was how weird its
characters and situations were (starting with Vaas Montenegro in "Far
Cry 3" and getting worse with every sequel). But, still, I bought and
played the games because the core loop was entertaining enough. "Far
Cry 6" just happened to push things beyond my comfort zone.

But others love that sort of stuff, and good for them (in fact, the over-the-top performance of Vaas in FC3 is cited by many as one of the high-points of the franchise). You yourself may like the new direction
(from posts made here, I think you're more open to that sort of stuff
than I am) and that's okay too.

But "Far Cry 6" is a departure from its predecessors in many ways, and
I just wanted to make that known before you bought it.

Me! So Far Cry 3 is where I should start! Got it.

I love the over the top performances. Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead/Army of Darkness (well really anything.) Lifeforce is another favorite. Jack Palance in Hawk the Slayer, etc.

Too often especially the characters you play in games have no personality at all, and most don't even talk.
