• Oh no!

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Wed Aug 31 21:14:25 2022
Is it time to panic? Has there ever been a greater threat to
video-gaming? Are we entering into a new dark age?!?
The Facebook Gaming App is shutting down in October!!!!*

The answer to all these questions is, of course, no. My intro is just
hyperbole at its worst designed solely for its entertainment value.
After all, the death of an app I've never installed for a service I
wouldn't be caught dead using is not something I give a damn about
(and, I suspect, neither do most people in this newsgroup). There is,
of course, no need for panic or and even reporting on the Facebook
Gaming app's demise here is superfluous, since I'd be surprised if
many Usenetters have even heard of it. Really, the only reason I am
posting this is because any news about Facebook not doing well is good
news as far as I am concerned, and I'm taking a mean-spirited laugh at
    their misfortune.

The Facebook Gaming app - available on iOS and Android until 28
October - was used to watch livestreams on Facebook Gaming. It was
intended as a competitor to Twitch, Discord and YouTube in a vain
attempt to suck down even more data from its users. It actually did
fairly well - it became the second most popular streaming platform,
but - like so much of its parent platform - Facebook Gaming quickly
became overrun by spam and hate and pirated content and other sorts of
'mean 'n' nasty stuff'. Its intial success was largely due to its
parent company having such a huge audience to pull from, rather than
offering any desired features and - over the years - its popularity
    slowly waned.

The Facebook Gaming service itself will remain active; it's just the
mobile apps that are being killed. Still, it's indicative of the
increasing unpopularity of Facebook amongst the younger generation
(even if they are slow to actually abandon the platform). Hurrah for
the next generation. but could you pick up the pace a bit?

Still, any bad news for Facebook is good news for everybody else.
Allow me this moment of schadenfreude and - perhaps - take this
opportunity to share in it yourself.

Oh, well, I never did watch streaming (o.k. a couple times for
Warframe giveaways that happened during the streams, but that was
on Twitch) Nor played the FB mobile apps.

    Exactly!

Like I said, it's not really news that matters to anyone here. I just
    like posting Facebook's failures ;-)
