GOG is having a summer sale. Mostly I ignore these, but some discounts
are beyond my ability to resist... and it's a dead certainty I'm going
to be spending some money when the price drops beneath $1USD.

Which, for dozens of games, it has. https://www.gog.com/en/promo/2022_the_gog_sale_1usd

Yeah, most of these games are old, but that doesn't mean they aren't
any good, and at $1 (or less!) each it's a great opportunity to pick
up a few games you may have missed.

Some highlights include the various Deus Ex games, the Tomb Raider
games, a few classic Apogee titles, and more.

Give it a look; it's not as if you're gonna break the bank with these
    sales.

The Mansion looks interesting and only 69 cents. But it is in early
access. What?? I do not see a release date for it.

Bought it any way, along with Thief 3 Deaadly Shadows for 98 cents.

i have all the Dus Ex titles. Don't feel like looking through all 7
pages. Gotta watch out. Most are DLC and books.

    Thanks!

A lot of space RTS in there, I had no idea there was even that many.

Blake Stone - I think I actually played that back in the day. Sort of
James Bond vs. Alien monstrosities in the Wolf 3d engine. Fun game
if you can get past the ancient controls & graphics.

Honestly, I always found Wolf3D the far better game. The Blake Stone
series had awful level design (and when Wolf3D comes out favorably in
that comparison, that's saying something!) and were a bit too much 'kitchen-sink' in their design (for example, you could revisit levels
and it had a currency system where you could buy supplies). Add to
that some unbalanced combat and using tech that was already behind the
curve, and you ended up with a game that felt dated and a lot less fun
than it could have been. Wolf3D at least benefited from its novelty
and simplicity. The "Blake Stone" games were an interesting experiment
whose various pieces and features never came together well.

Oh, that's a better link; thanks. Beyond page 3 or 4 it's really not
worth scanning the list unless you like DLC for more expensive games.

Of course, I have a self-admitted soft spot for older games. I often
enjoy the game for themselves although, as noted, many of the games
are, by nature of their age, fairly rough compared to modern titles.

But I also like these older games for their historical worth, whether
that is a reminder of what gaming was like in 1987 (or whenever) or
where ideas and features in modern games that we take for granted
originated. And - rarely these days, given the size of my library - I
play games just because they are a cultural touch point that (somehow)
I missed playing when they were new (it's like trying to understand
the zeitgeist of younger gamers and never trying Roblox or Fortnite).
If I want to remain part of the conversation, I like actually knowing
    what I'm talking about.

So I think sales like these are a great opportunity for gamers to add
missing titles to their library... even though in this case it doesn't
benefit me very much. The games I'm buying? I'm getting them not
because I don't have them yet, but simply for the convenience GOG
    offers; a nicely packaged self-installing DRM-free installer that I
can download at will (or stash on an external drive) and play without
the need to worry about CD-ROMs or floppies. That's definitely worth a
    few pence to me.

The Star Wolves series is also worth a look, but I have several similar
games that I'm not playing, so I'm going to pass. I'm sorely tempted at
$3 for the entire series though.

For whatever reason, the "Jagged Alliance" games and I never gelled.
They are - by all accounts - games I should love; they are essentially old-school XCom with a different skin - but there was something about
them that kept me from engaging.

The Star Wolves series is also worth a look, but I have several similar
games that I'm not playing, so I'm going to pass. I'm sorely tempted at

I broke down and (re)bought a bunch of Apogee platformers. I'm pretty
sure I owned most of these but - again - the convenience of GOG's
    downloads is appreciated.

I remember buying games from Apogee. It was a more innocent age; I'd
actually send them CASH in an envelope and they'd send back a disk. I
remember the excitement of opening the postbox and seeing one of those
big 5.25" disk-mailers crammed inside (because, of course, the mailmen
had no idea that bending a disk wasn't good idea ;-). But oddly
    enough, the disks always worked.

(Even if it didn't, I recall Apogee had excellent customer service and
they probably would have replaced the disk. As I said, it was a more
    innocent time).

The best part of buying games from Apogee? You got the cheat codes on
a handy-dandy sheet. Even with the Internet/BBS, cheat codes for games
often weren't readily available, so this little extra from the
publisher was always a welcome bonus! ;-)

Dunno about the Evil Dead game, but I'd be wary; games in that
franchise have never been all that good. Honestly, it was Bruce
Campbell that made the franchise, and digital representations of him
were never quite equal to the task of the real thing. Plus, as much as
I loved the movies, they're sort of a one-trick pony and all the
attempts to draw out the franchise have been stretching the humor far
beyond the point of being funny.

"Saints Row", on the other hand, is available already, albeit not on
Steam (they're doing that exclusive thing on Epic) and has received less-than-stellar reviews. Apparently it lacks the verve and
originality of the earlier games, instead coming across as a rather characterless GTA-clone; it's more "True Crimes: LA" than "Saints
    Row".

I enjoyed the old one set in Deerborn, it had BC doing the voice (I think)
so that made it good to me.

I just watched Army of Darkness with my son Sunday. I'd forgotten just
how cheesy and silly it was. My son commented "What is this,

Ugh. Probably pulling back from Saint's Row IV which is more like
Matrix or Superheroes or something. I like SR IV, but yeah it went
a bit too far. Since the new one isn't getting good reviews, I'll
wait until it's on deep discount - or given away free.

The reviews I've read describe it more as a characterless Saints Row
clone that doesn't innovate over the previous games. It still sounds destinctive from the Grand Theft Auto games, just not in anyway different
    than the preivous games.

I'm still interested in playing it eventually, I was never going to
buy it at full price anyways, just for the fact you can customize your
own character. I wish more open world games did this, even if Saints
    Row already did it.

I've done good in this world. Now I'm tired and just want to be a cranky

Al Lowe must be rolling in his grave; he did that joke first!*

(Or he would be, if he were in a grave. Or dead.)

    * The Leisure Suit Larry series jumped from 3 to 5, skipping 4
entirely, way back in 1991. Which not only proves that all the good
jokes have already been done, but the bad ones too ;-)
