• Trying Fallout 76 (again)

From Rin Stowleigh@21:1/5 to All on Sat Aug 20 11:03:31 2022
I tried Fallout76 a couple of years back and the graphics were
unbearably hard on the eyes (blurriness).

It went on sale for ten bucks on Steam, so I thought maybe they have
fixed the display settings.... they hadn't, but I found some settings
on Reddit that helped a great deal (moved it from the unplayable
category to okay it has my interest now).

So, I'm not sure what folks here think of the game or how many have
tried it. It's got that weird atmospheric vibe the Fallout games are
known for, which I do like.

Its still $10 if you haven't tried it.

If you're not into multiplayer, don't let the mp aspect put you off,
as you're not going to see lots of other players running around all
over the place unless you're looking for them.

Settings I used to address graphic blurriness at this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/fo76/comments/9wrx8g/how_to_turn_off_depth_of_field_distant_textures

From other reviews, it's improved much from launch, and has many missions and exploration possibilities

Yeah, once the graphic bluriness is addressed (why that still needs to
be a reddit find instead of part of a game update is beyond me) it now
feels like a proper Fallout game.

I think some of the earlier objections were due to lack of NPCs but
apparently they added them because I see them regularly.

I don't think I would have been as happy with it at the $30 price
point even with the fix, but for ten it was a no brainer.

If you ignore the mp aspects except at endgame it's a fine addition to the franchise, though the lack of modability irks me.

But speaking of that, apparently there's work to bring '76 into 4 with mods.
It doesn't look like it's as finished as the one video I watched implied... There's also progress ones for 1, 2, 3 and NV.

Yeah, that's a fairly serious loss. Modding is part-n-parcel of the
Bethesda RPG experience and - while I understand why it can't be
included - I'd miss that feature.

But not as much as the ability to use a console command to give my
character infinite carry weight. I /despise/ limited inventory
systems; their inclusion just means I have to constantly retread my
steps to carry out all the loot. Yes, it's a cheat but I don't care.
It's the killer-feature that transforms a game from good to great. ;-)

I really haven't given much thought to F76 since its release. I'm not
a frequent player of MMOs to begin with, and there was nothing about
Fallout76 that made me think it would be worth the time. Its launch
was notoriously poor, and Bethesda's response was amateur.

But - though I haven't been watching it too closely - Bethesda has
apparently been putting work into it. Maybe it's time I gave it a
    look?

Honestly, the thing that's putting me off the most is not anything
I've heard about "Fallout76"; it's my experience with Bethesda's other
MMO... "Elder Scrolls Online." ESO wasn't a bad game - if you like
MMORPGS - but neither did it stand out in any way either. It was a
completely average MMO, of the sort that only seemed to appeal to
die-hard Elder Scrolls fans (who had no alternative) or die-hard MMO
fans (who liked the genre's formula). But if you weren't in that
fanatical audience? There were a lot better games to spend your time
    on.

Still... $10 USD is a tempting price for the opportunity to wander a post-apocalyptic Virgina (the best type of Virgina? ;-). I would be
lying if I wasn't thinking about giving it a chance...

Actually *West* Virginia (where the men are men and the farm animals
    are nervous)...

... in this case two-headed farm animals
