Attention, attention! This is your regular Thursday Epic freebies >announcement-thingee. Y'all know the drill.
This week's offering:
Doom64
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/doom-64
You probably know the story of this one; it's a remastered port of the >Nintendo64 version of "Doom" now on PC. Although the N64 version
shared a lot of assets and story with the original game, thematically
it was quite different; it was much slower paced in its gameplay, with
a bigger focus on puzzles and navigating the labyrinth. It's still a >first-person shooter first-n-foremost, but it's more akin to the
cautious exploration in "Half Life" (albeit without the strong
environmental storytelling) than the frantic run-n-gun that is usually >associated with "Doom".
Long forgotten, "Doom64" earned itself a reputation it doesn't - I
feel - quite deserve. It's been put up on a pedestal largely because -
after so many years of 'regular' Doom - it feels fresh and original.
It's an okay game, but it's quite slow and it's mazes aren't much fun
to traverse. It's great that it's different and it's not necessarily a
bad game, but it's flawed and - at least in my opinion - not that much
fun once the novelty of its existence fades. Any "Doom" fan should
give it a try, but if you're expecting a great exciting transformation
of the franchise, you'll be disappointed.
Still, it's a Doom game and it's free, so I'm adding it to my library.
You have a week to decide if you want to do the same.

I don't know, feels like this might be the end of it for me and Doom. I
quite liked the 2016 thingy and I haven't gotten around to "Eternal" yet
but I wasn't really tempted by the reviews.
Oh BTW, I did play the text adventure Doom back when. Anyone else?
I'm unfamiliar with any text-adventures based on Id's game, however.
There's one called "FooM!" (https://doom.fandom.com/wiki/FOOM!)
Never played it, though.
