Quest VR without Facebook?

So, Facebook has announced it is going to decouple the QuestVR from
requiring a Facebook account to use its QuestVR headset. Is this good
news?
Well... maybe not.
Firstly, all we've got is an announcement, and not an actual
implementation. And even after the Facebook requirement is waived,
you'll still need a "Meta Account", which really isn't any better.
Plus, there's nothing that ensures that Facebook won't change things
back at some point. Furthermore - even if all the above issues were
somehow moot - do you really want to give any money to company like
Facebook?
So I look at this announcement by Facebook more than a little
cynically. There is increasing worry about Facebook's reach -
especially amongst the technorati - and it seems that this is merely
an attempted rebranding rather than any real change. The QuestVR is -
for its price - probably one of the better bargains you can get if
you're interested in VR, but - despite this announcement - it still
tainted by its association with its parent company.
Its competitors - HTC Vive, Valve's Index, Sony's PSVR - might not be
quite as affordable but are still a better deal.
