• FREE GAMES: Ancient Enemy & Killing Floor 2

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 7 11:29:04 2022
Yadda yadda yadda, Epic, Thursday, games. You know the rest.

    This week:

    Ancient Enemy
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/ancient-enemy

    Killing Floor 2
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/killing-floor-2

    "Ancient Enemy"? Never heard of it. Aww, geez. Another card-battler;
collect the cards, pit the monsters the cards represent in battles to
complete an unsatisfying RPG. Given how many of these darn things
there are, I guess they must be popular - either that or they're so
cheap to make that even a minimum of sales equals a profit - but I've
no interest in the things. Is this one any good? Its got good reviews
but, honestly, I don't care one way or the other.

And "Killing Floor 2"? Well, I have heard of that one, at least. It's
an average co-op FPS shooter. It's no "Left4Dead" (or even
"Back4Blood") but if you've got an itch to shoot zombie-mutant things,
its not a bad way to waste your time. Still, given the founder's
stated politics, I'm hesitant to recommend this game; sure, it's fun
but with so many other good, free games available, why not take a
stand and /not/ play a game from somebody that supports fucking over
50.8% of Americans? (Also, Epic had this game on give-away already two
years ago, although I admit that sort of is like complaining, "This
food is lousy... and such small portions too!" ;-)

Not the most exciting selection this week, but we're in the summer
doldrums (or the winter doldrums if you're in the other hemisphere)
and I guess they keep the EXCITING freebies for later. Still, its some
more free games so let's not complain TOO loudly or they might stop
    entirely. ;-)

Anyway, you got the usual week to snag this batch. Have fun with
    them... or not.

Thanks. :) I got both even though I doubt I will play them. :(

Maybe a pc version of a real card game for people who want to play?
I don't know either. I probably won't try it, but picked it up.

    And "Killing Floor 2"

Apparently given away before as I already have it and I certainly didn't buy it.

Card-battlers don't really have much to do with real card games. The
cards themselves are just placeholders for inventoried monsters.
Honestly, my opposition to the genre probably has less to do with the
mechanics - change the cards to a list and where I click-n-drag the
monsters onto the battlefield and I'd likely not make comment - than
my general opposition to cards being involved in role-playing games at
all. It's an emotional, knee-jerk reaction but one I've not bothered
    to quash.

Given the number of similar games there's obviously a market for the
things, and that's great. I've just never seen (or never allowed
    myself) to see the appeal.

It was given away almost exactly two years prior.
