I don't get these posts. Nominally, they're a result of GoogleGroups >less-than-clear interface, where people unwittingly respond to a
message posted decades past. Yet, too often they are one-shot
comments. You'd think that if some lost reader were browsing the
ancient archives, they'd make more than the one comment, and would
hang around long enough to see if anyone made a response to their
effort.
Increasingly, it seems like these 'misguided' commenters are trolls
seeking to get a rise out of some stranger on the internet.
Still, in the off chance the original poster was serious:
As was pointed out prior to my response, your are replying to a thread
made decades ago. The original poster will never see it. This is
because you are browsing Usenet using GoogleGroups. While you are
welcome to do so, if you are truly interested in joining the
conversation, it is strongly recommended you invest in acquiring a
proper NNTP connection. One suggestion is Eternal September >(https://www.eternal-september.org/); it's fairly complete and access
is free (you'll still need NNTP software, of course).
I've never heard of that. I have always used Forte Agent since the
beginning of time (I think).

Eternal September is an NNTP provider (server).
(others are GigaNews, EasyNews, NewsHosting, and more) They are where
the messages you read come from (and where the messages you type go
to).
Forte Agent is an NNTP client (software).
Others include Gravity, Thunderbird, Pine, XNews, and more. They're
what you use to read the comments or use to type your message into,
and then they connect to the server and send/receive the data.
I opined on the former, not the latter. EternalSeptember is a good
starting place for people new to Usenet because it is free and focused
on text messages rather than binary transfers (it suffers in up-time
and retention, though).
I stayed silent on the latter, save to mention additional software
would be required.

I've been using Eternal September for many months now and although I did
have problems originally when posts often couldn't be posted without
some minor shenanigans that went away when out when a config file got
corrupt and I had to set-up the server details again.

Eternal September has its problems but given its price ($0) and its ease-of-access (just create an account and setup the software) its
hard not to recommend it, especially to new users. I've honestly
considered switching to it, although less because of its price and
more because I always feel dirty paying a provider whose main appeal
seems to be access to its binaries, which I've little interest in.
Mostly I stick with them because a) the price I do pay is miniscule,
b) I like the years-long retention (which, for instance, came in handy
after I dropped off Usenet for a year in 2020 and wanted to see what I
missed when I finally returned), and c) it just works.
But if you're new to Usenet and aren't sure its something you value
enough to shell out a few bucks for? Eternal September is a great
starting point. I can't even hold its faults against it, considering
it is essentially a side-project run by a single person on a
shoe-string budget (and he doesn't even have a Patreon page).
But then, anything is better than google groups ;-)

I do use google groups but only from browsing (you'd think it'd be easy
to change the e-mail displayed) on the iPad. So far I;ve just been too
lazy to find a news reader for iOS that's free.

accurate information, since I haven't made any serious attempt to use
it in years and years; my most common interaction with it is when
users - like the one who inadvertently started this thread - resurrect
a thirty-year old comment and then I search it to see just how old the comment actually is. ;-)
Meanwhile...
NewsTap for iOS has a free "lite" version - unsurprisingly called
"NewsTap Lite" - that only allows subscription to two newsgroups but
is otherwise full-featured. The full version is a complete NNTP client
that works fairly well, given the limitations of its platform (e.g.,
smaller screen and touch controls) and is - in my opinion - well worth
the $3.99 price-tag. If you are interested in using Usenet on Apple's
mobile devices, it is at least worth a look.

Ta for that, I did look sometime ago but could only find paid for ones.
I've downloaded it so will give it a try.
The two groups limit, not a problem for me as this is the only NG I now
use as all of the rest have died. The controls, that's fine as well as
it's an iPad which is just fine to use unless I want to make a Spalls
length post!
