It even got Very Positive reviews! I added it to my account. Thanks.

I already have Valheim for a survival game but I haven't played it in
    a long time.

I didn't like it during the free weekend when I tried it. I still took it just in case. ;P

I /didn't/ claim it... but only because I already owned it (très
surprise, n'est-ce pas?). I got it several years ago (2017?), back at
the height of the survival-game craze, when it seemed you couldn't
walk ten steps without stumbling across a streamer playing one of the
dozens of survival games that were all the rage at the time. So, I
decided to give one of the games a try; ARK had some of the nicer
visuals /and/ it had dinosaurs, so it was the one I picked.

I can't say I was too impressed; my memories of the game are running
around half-nude wacking at trees to make gear and getting killed by
other players. Lacking any overall plot, the games mechanics seemed
overly harsh and not much fun. Its felt like a bad copy of "Minecraft"
with prettier graphics. I don't even think I saw any dinosaurs.

Now, in fairness, I think the game was still in early access at the
time (ARK is one of the games that soured me on Early Access titles,
in fact). It's probably improved greatly since then; I really should
give it another shot. I don't think I would enjoy it much more -
survival games have never been my thing; I prefer more structured
games - but I'd like to see how much the game's mechanics and engine
have improved (IIRC, I fell through the world a few times in my
original playthrough). And I'd really like to see a dinosaur finally.

I am curious to try a survival game. I never did before and I have no
idea if I would like them or not. This is the entire reason I like
adding free games to my library. I can try games outside my comfort
zone and see if they click with me or not.

Now, in fairness, I think the game was still in early access at the

I will never do Early Access. I tend to do the exact opposite and wait
for a game to be really finished with all the inevitable DLC included.

I'd say give it a try. It's got good reviews, and - as you pointed out
    - it's free; all you have to lose is some time. The only downside I
see to ARK is that it is probably not well suited to people new to the
genre, especially since (based on further reviews) its population
still likes to gank newbies. But since that's seemingly part and
parcel of all survival games nowadays, you may just have to
    grin-n-bear it.

Anyway, I didn't want my experience to put anyone off. As I said, it
was in the early (well, earlier) days of the project, and I'm not sure
how well it reflects the modern experience. Give it a try and report
    back ;-)

I will never do Early Access. I tend to do the exact opposite and wait
for a game to be really finished with all the inevitable DLC included.

That's usually my method too. Not being twelve years old anymore, the
fear of missing out has all but completely vanished (I knew getting
old was good for something!). Even if I don't get into the Next Big
Thing (and odds are I wouldn't really miss out anyway), the /next/
Next Big Thing is right around the corner (and its probably better
than the current Big Thing anyway). A little patience goes a long way
(and often saves a lot of money ;-)

I didn't chose ARK because it was early access; it just happened to be
one of the 'big' survival games people were talking about at the time,
and I figured it would be a good example of the type. And - as far as
Early Access titles went - I suppose it was an okay experience; the
game was buggy and unpolished, but not so much that the game was
completely unplayable. It did give me a good idea as to what the game
was about and - unlike many early access games - the developers
apparently stuck with long enough to release a finished product. My
distaste for early access came not from ARK specifically as to my
general dislike of playing unfinished games; more than anything else,
    ARK merely confirmed that displeasure.

The Epic Game Store gave it away free a while back, and I played it
solo for a while. That's probably the best away to give it a try,
but if you really want to get into it, I think you pretty much need to
play with other people. The game really isn't balanced for solo play,
though if it you do play solo it tweaks some of the game's parameters
    to make it easier.

A better introduction to survival games I think would be Subnautica,
a game the Epic Game Store also gave away, as it's strictly a single
    player game.

This game has Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam and I do own it
on Epic so I will definitely try this one first. Thank you.
