You won this round, Ant, but heed my words, the next
freebie-announcement shall be mine! <shakes fist in air>
;-)
I always thought Sanitarium was overrated. Its often held up as one of
the better late-90s adventure games and, while its not a bad game, I
don't think it was all that great either. Then again, I don't actually remember anything too specific about the game either (although,
arguably, that's equally telling; I'd remember more if it were a
better game ;-). Mostly, I remember it had some lame attempts at psychological horror, some not-hard but still too far
out-of-left-field puzzles, and a lot of slow traversal of the maps as
you had to go back-n-forth across the levels to solve the games
various riddles.
Not that any of that should stop anyone from grabbing the game.
There's no sense letting a free game go to waste, after all ;-)

I then realised that Steam isn't GoG.

Speaking of GOG, I've noticed that recently they've really picked up
on the 'good old games' bit. Usually, when I sort their games by year,
I've already purchased all the games from the 80s and early 90s. But
there are whole bunches of new games for me to buy now, including a
number of pre-GoldBox SSI titles.
In fairness, most of these are more "old games" rather than "good
games" and I can't imagine many people rushing out to buy them
(except weirdos like myself) but its nice to see GOG refocusing on the
brand that originally made them unique.
They still need to work a bit on upping their game when it comes to
the 'extras', though. They used to offer soundtracks, game bibles,
artwork, clue books and more... now we're lucky if they offer a
manual.
