• I don't see any chatter about the Steam Spring Sale

From PW@21:1/5 to All on Thu Mar 21 09:55:48 2024
Just about free games as usual.

I have always thought that I may be the only one here that buys new or
    newish games ;-)

I don't see anything I must have anyway.

I got a physics puzzle game called Relicta for about $2.

Almost all the characters are Indian women, which is unusual and pretty
    cool. The graphics are mid.

I haven't gotten very far, but so far it has involved manipulating cubes
by polarizing them positively or negatively, using teleporters, and
    negating gravity on them.

The physics are apparently tied to framerate because there is a warning
about letting that drop too low.

My card runs passive cooling at 60 fps, 1920x1080. You won't have to
    worry about it, I think.

I was tempted to buy Yakuza Kiwami 2 when it was down in the single
digits, but I didn't pull the trigger in time and it's back at $20.

    Also tempting:
    $13 - Day's Gone
    $16 - NeiR:Automata

But really I've got too many on my plate, tons of free games to check
out, and ER DLC coming out Soonâ„¢.

Steam sales really aren't worth discussing anymore (IMHO). They are
both too frequent, and lack the excitment (and incredible discounts)
that once made them so notable. They also lack the frivilous
atmosphere and games that made each sale an Event. Now... they're just >things-that-happen.

That said, yeah of course I snagged a few games while they were
discounted. (It's what I do, after all). Most notably, I grabbed a
copy of Half-Life: Alyx, just so I could say I have it.

Also - somewhat regretably - "Monster Hunter: World". My saddness of
the latter has nothing to do with the game itself, but it was only
several days later that I realized that it was a Capcom game, and I've
been trying not to give that company my money anymore. Not after their
stance of "mods=piracy" and adding DRM to older titles. They're not a
company worth rewarding anymore. I really wish I'd noticed their
connection to "Monster Hunter" /before/ I hit the 'buy' button...
    <sigh>

But overall, the Steam sale isn't exciting. None of the discounts are
so remarkable as to make me rush to finally get that game thats been
on my wishlist since forever. If I hadn't snagged "Half Life: Alyx"
now, I probably would have purchased it in a month or six, and ended
up paying the same price. In many ways, my purchases coinciding with
the "Spring Sale" were almost accidental.

    *--

I agree with you Spalls. Not exciting any more. I am probably too
old now to get excited this any longer.

Same, and I don't play very many "new" games.

I bought Cold Waters. Submarine game. Probably will just go into my >>collection like baseball hats ;-)

"Cold Waters" has lingered on my Steam wishlist ever so long. But
every time it goes on sale, I see another, more interesting game to
buy instead, and I think to myself, 'Is "Cold Waters" /really/ worth
$n anyway?' Like you, I wonder, 'Isn't this just going to end up in
    the never-gonna-be-played pile?'

So there it sits, perpetually stuck on the wishlist. I suppose
eventually I'll grab it (me being me), but only when it gets down to
an outrageously low price. So far, even $7 USD wasn't enough to
    convince me.

The thing is, I've never really found naval simulation games all that
much fun. Their main allure is, I think, my nostalgia. "Silent
Service" was among some of the first computer games I ever owned, and
while I played that game quite a lot, that was largely because I only
had a limited selection of games at the time. Back when you only had a >handful of titles, even the terrible ones got a lot of play-time!

You are right on the money Spalls!!!

There were other sub-sims too ("Silent Hunter", "Harpoon", "GATO",
"Aces of the Deep", "Fast Attack", "SSN-21 Seawolf", "Jane's 688i >Hunter-Killer"... and that's just the subs. Surface ships got their
time too: "Jane's Fleet Command", "Man of War", "Aegis: Guardian of
the Fleet", "Dreadnaughts", "Destroyer", "USS Ticonderoga", and more)
and I dutifully purchased and played all those too... but never with
any great relish. I found all of them too slow-paced, too technical
    for my liking.

"Cold Waters" is, apparently, more action-based than most, which is
why I've thought about giving it a chance. But still, the legacy of >disappointment I've had with the genre makes it a very hard sell...

I used to like some of the others a lot back in the day. I have a
    couple on GOG.

But, I doubt I will play Cold Waters or any of them. Better games to
spend my time on but really haven't been playing much of anything
lately and haven't had the urge.

    Thanks,

One of the problems of allowing The Number to dominate your shopping
habits is that you end up with so many games that even the good ones
often get lost in the mess. Even if I /were/ intending to play "Cold
Waters", odds are high I'd forget about it next time I'm scrolling
through the library looking for my next gaming fix.

(and then, not finding anything interesting, end up driving a truck
    again ;-)

Not that'll slow me down any. The Number must grow!

As others have said, sales are just so often now and the discounts
aren't that good so what's the point of looking at them as it's not as
though they won't be on sale again in the near future. Personally I also
steer clear of them so I don't want to get back into my old bad habit of
buying games that are a bargain and then only playing them for an hour
or sometimes not at all. That's not a bargain, that's a waste of money.
