Well, it's that time of year again; the Winter* Solstice Holidays are
upon us once more. It's all figgy puddings and family get-togethers
and shopping and decorations. Oh, and our annual c.s.i.p.g.action
Holiday Give-Away is back too.
Long-time members of the newsgroup will know what this is all about
and how it's going to go down, so all you folk need to know is that,
yes, I will be participating again, so be prepared for the usual daily
posts, starting December 1st.
But since I've been seeing a number of new faces, I thought I'd make a
brief FAQ for those who haven't enjoyed this c.s.i.p.g.action
tradition before.
The Completely Unofficial c.s.i.p.g.action Holiday Give-Away FAQ ------------------------------------------------------------------
* WHAT is it?
The c.s.i.p.g.action Holiday Give-Away is our annual tradition
(at least nine years strong) where - in celebration of
the winter holidays - we give away video games! Anyone can
participate, although (not to blow my own horn), I tend to be
the most prolific provider. ;-)
* WHEN is it?
The give-away doesn't have an official start-date,
although it tends to be over the Christmas holiday period.
In my case, I plan to be posting a give-away at a semi-
random time each day between December 1st and December
25th. Unless I forget (it's happened).
* WHO is it for?
Me! You! Everybody on c.s.i.p.g.action! Anyone can offer a
game, anyone can grab a game. Although, since this is supposed
to be a cheerful holiday of sharing, we do ask that you try
not to hog ALL the games; if you've already grabbed a bunch,
maybe slow down and let somebody else get the next few.
And don't let me steal all the glory. Feel free to offer any
duplicate games you might have hanging about. The more the
merrier!
* WHY are you doing this?
Well, I can't speak for others, but I have three reasons for it:
1) To celebrate the holidays, bring Christmas cheer, and generally
make the season a happier time. Life can be stressful sometimes,
so hopefully getting a free game will offer a bit of good feeling
and happiness.
2) I'm a big fan of Usenet, and want to help keep it alive. Giving
away free games not only makes this a place worth visiting, but
also inspires discussion.
3) Finally, if you've spent any time on c.s.i.p.g.action, you may
have noticed I have an issue with buying games; specifically, I
buy a lot of them. Fortunately, I /also/ have an issue with
buying FULL-PRICED games, which minimizes the problem. And one
of the best ways to get cheap games is to buy them in bundles.
But sometimes those bundles include games I already own. So I
use the give-away to clear away the chaff.
* Sounds neat. So, HOW does it work?
Generally, it goes like this. Every day, I'll make a new post.
In that post will be a key for a game. The key itself will be
split up into parts and embedded into the text of the post.
(I know, it's a bit annoying but experience has shown us that
this convoluted method is necessary to keep bots from
harvesting the key before the regulars get a chance at it).
If you want the game, combine the parts of the key into a
single string, and then input that key into Steam (or Epic,
or GOG, or wherever. It'll say where in the post itself).
Viola, instant free game added to your library!
But here's the catch: the key only works for the first person
who claims it (I'm not Epic Games flush with Fortnite money
so I can't buy an infinite number of copies for everybody).
So it pays to visit the newsgroup often. (And yeah, sometimes
you just might not get that free game).
Oh, and if you /do/ grab the free game, please be sure to post
a response letting everybody else know that you've done so. Not
only is it polite to say thank you, it lets everybody else know
that key has been claimed.
At least, that's how I intend to do it. If you want to give away
some free games too, you're welcome to invent your own method!
The fun begins in a couple of days! I hope to see you all there. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and - through the graciousness of this
give-away - let all your Numbers grow large!

I always forget the rules of play and never get to claim anything in
time.
How would I offer games that I do not play any more or haven't
started? Maybe they have to be unplayed games?

Unfortunately, Steam doesn't let you resell games.

'Rules' is a bit of a stretch. Just come to Usenet as usual and read
the posts. If there's a key, plug it into Steam (or wherever) and
maybe you get a free game. ;-)
I try to post semi-randomly in order to give everybody a chance at the
games. And often others participate as well, which gives you an even
better chance at getting a freebie.
TL;DR: make it a point to check c.s.i.p.g.action at least once a day
and your odds of getting a free game increase dramatically ;-)
How would I offer games that I do not play any more or haven't
started? Maybe they have to be unplayed games?
If the games are already in your library - played or unplayed - it's
too late.
You need a key to a game you've never claimed, such as you might
acquire through a third-party reseller like Humble, Amazon, Fanatical,
Green Man Gaming, etc. Either buy a game there (or get it free), then
- and this is the important bit - DON'T type it into Steam (or GOG, or
Epic, or wherever).
Because once it is entered into Steam (GOG, etc) it's claimed and
nobody else can take it.
Which isn't to suggest you need to go out and buy games for others
now... but if you happen to have one or two keys lying around, well...
the c.s.i.p.g.action Holiday Give-Away is one way to make sure they
aren't /ENTIRELY/ wasted
Or just sit back and reap the bounty of somebody else's profligate
spending. It's all good.
Nice! TBH, I don't know where to get steam codes or I would probably
send a few.

I had one extra code last year to share because I purchased a bundle
of games that included one I already owned. I imagine this is how
Spalls ends up with so many duplicates.

Yes, that's the best part, there has been a few good ones from those
other sources, but Spall's ratio is much higher.

You only say sorry when you might have done something offensive or
impolite, it's a total myth that Canadians apologize for everything.
