• FREE GAME: Deliver Us Mars

From Spalls Hurgenson@21:1/5 to All on Thu Nov 23 11:00:13 2023
It's the third Thursday of November, and you know what that means. No,
not this American Thanksgiving thing; that's not important at all. No,
it's our third opportunity to weasel free games from Epic. Get your
    priorities straight! ;-)

    This week we weasel:

    * Deliver Us Mars
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/deliver-us-mars
Take on the role as a cosmic FedEx employee as you move planets to
their intended destination. No wait, that's completely wrong.
"Deliver" is an over-the-shoulder action-adventure-platformer, albeit
an extremely simplistic one. In truth, it veers pretty closely into
'walking simulator' territory. Still, it has some nice visuals (in
places, at least) and the sci-fi setting is pretty neat (the
characters and story, not so much). Not really a game I'd pay for, but
as a freebie? I can't see a reason not to grab it and give it a try.

You have the usual seven days to grab this one. Will there be more
opportunity to weasel next week? I guess we'll find out then!

That sounds more interesting frankly. Someone make a planet delivery
    game now!

Thanks, that's one I had my eye on even if it isn't my usual fare.
Just in time for me to download and give try as I'm getting bored
    with what I'm playing.

    What?

    What what?

    If you're asking what I've been playing lately, it's Warsim, a text/
ascii kingdom sim by a single person, the same who made The
Wastes which was a favorite of mine. Really it's kind of a 4x game,
also coliseum betting features prominently. Perhaps a bit too
easy, and I beat all my rival kingdoms in my first play, so getting a
bit bored with it. Surprisingly good sound effects for what it is,
though the music is mostly not.

Day 2: Pretty good so far, probably 6 hours in? The puzzles have
been mostly simple so far, though there's one I couldn't really figure
out and just stumbled into solving it. Very linear. I liked the
whole launch section. Zero gravity, and mars gravity is disappointing.
It had far too much friction slowing you down, perhaps a limitation
on the game engine, or a gameplay consideration for ease.

    I am itching for a more action/fighting game so I don't know if I'll
make it to the end. Although I read the game is only about 8-9 hours typically, so maybe I'm near the end. On the other hand I tend to
take much long than most people with games, though it doesn't
have the usual time-sinks of finding and collecting everything
that games I take long with, so maybe not.

If it is only that long it's less than watching the LotR trillogy, so
not a big time commitment. Probably worth it if you like
    space exploration.

Well, I rather enjoyed "Deliver Us the Moon" which I believe was also a
freebie earlier. Puzzles on the moon weren't exactly hard but there were
some annoying QT pipes trying to grab the next oxygen bottle before you
run out. Unfortunately the protagonist instadies if she runs out of
oxygen. I hope they removed those from the sequel.

Oh yes, the plot of the Moon was pretty weird and seemed unlikely. I
expect that will continue on Mars. The Moon was already very pretty so
    likely this is too.

Anyways, this is one Epic Freebie I'll likely enjoy.

I finished it, There was one small portion where you had to get somewhere
with oxygen, I died 3 times trying to figure out where to go, but that was it.
That was the only time sensitive portion in the game.

I didn't have to look up any puzzles, so that means it's pretty easy.

I wished for being able to make a choice a couple times through the game
it felt sort of like watching an interactive movie.

Oh yes, the plot of the Moon was pretty weird and seemed unlikely. I

Oh, didn't know there was a previous game, I might check that out
if I have it floating around free somewhere eventually.

Yes this one's a bit weird and unlikely (impossible due to physics in
bits.) I also felt it was slightly annoying pushing its message of
    Earth First.
