• ArmX6 freezes

    From T M Smith@21:1/5 to All on Tue Dec 21 15:10:39 2021
A short while ago there was mail concerning freezing of the screen on I
    believe the armX6.
I am suffering from the same problem which seems to occur when Hermes
    tries to send mail.
Was a solution found for this problem?

    a) Does Alt-Break work? (and if so, what app does it offer to stop?)

    b) Is it a problem with a specific e-mail stuck in the current queue, or
    with any e-mail sent?

A little more information is needed.

What version of !NetFetch/!Hermes are you using?

Is the freeze with sending or receiving e-mail?

Are connecting to the correct servers on PlusNet ?

I only see a possible freeze if there is a problem with the actual
connection if sending or in the case of receiving if the server is being
very slow to respond. Or the internet is down.

Just been looking at the headers in this posting and noticed you have the
t missing from your tmsmith36 address on both the Message ID and
References. So something is not quite setup correctly on your computer.
This could cause issues with some servers.

Hermes keeps its logs in !NetFetch.Apps.!Hermes.Logs. There are logs

Set the mails logs to 'Detailed' in the Emailboxes Edit dialogue.

If using Messenger pro, its the 7th icon from the left (called toggle

Yes they are OK if not using a secured connection.

In MsgServe Choices imap port 143
    SMTP port25
    NNTP port 119

You don't really need to know those.

    Security Settings ??

You are currently not using a secured connection. If you wanted to use
secure connections, they use different ports, etc.

To see the log files for your connection. There are two ways of looking at them. I would suggest open Messenger Pro Choices window and click on Email Accounts icon, when that window opens click on the Outgoing mail servers
radio button at top of the window and then select account you are using
(mine is called PlusNet) by double clicking on it, this should open a new window, on the right hand side of this window are 4 radio buttons, click
on the one called Mail Logs. To view the current log click on the "View
Log" button, this opens a text file. You might be on the "Basic" log, I
suggest you change this to "Detailed" while you have the issue. remember
to click on Change to save the new settings. Then try sending an email
again. The log will now have much more information on how you are
    connecting.

Was a solution found for this problem?

A little more information is needed.

What version of !NetFetch/!Hermes are you using?

Is the freeze with sending or receiving e-mail?

Are connecting to the correct servers on PlusNet ?

I only see a possible freeze if there is a problem with the actual
connection if sending or in the case of receiving if the server is being
very slow to respond. Or the internet is down.

Just been looking at the headers in this posting and noticed you have the
t missing from your tmsmith36 address on both the Message ID and
References. So something is not quite setup correctly on your computer.
This could cause issues with some servers.

    a) Does Alt-Break work? (and if so, what app does it offer to stop?)

    b) Is it a problem with a specific e-mail stuck in the current queue, or
    with any e-mail sent?
Yes alt-Break works but does not give any additional info.

When you press Alt-Break, it will offer to stop a named application, or step
on to the next application. The first application to be named on pressing Alt-Break is the one that the system thinks has hung, although it's not infallible.

    Is the first application Hermes?

This is another one of those things that comes from not having a proper
process model. You don't have a list of resources the task has claimed (because the kernel doesn't really know about tasks, so when a request for a resource is made the kernel can't chalk it up to a particular process or
task) and so you can't tidy up properly when you need to kill a task.

Of course there are hacks and workarounds that get you 95% of the way there, but it's the remaining 5% that get you in the end.

    Mmmnnn!
I think, back in the days, I had something from R-Comp that allowed me to control a RISC OS computer from another computer...

I think it was called "Remote Control Software" but it was such a long
time ago 18 maybe 19 years ago, I really can't remember much about it.

Actually I might still have that somewhere, not used it in years and
    years.

Looking in the !Boot file runnning at stertup are :- Organiser, Edit, Printers, SMBserver

Malcolm, I suggest removing SMBserver from your startup, its known to have issues. Then reboot and see if you have any errors on startup and any
    further freezes.

Is this secure across the internet? It would also involve buying 2

No: "DeskWatcher does not encrypt any data during the transmission over the network". It wasn't stated as a requirement in the OP...

A VPN would be possible, of course.

It would also involve buying 2 licences at 60 euros each.

Maybe. It's 2 * 60 EUR for someone to have a licence to connect to other machines one at a time (so it could be used to support others later on,
too). Or each person could buy a single machine licence at 2 * 36 EUR.

To be able to support say Malcolm in this case for maybe a one off
