• Help upgrading acorn a4000 to riscos 4.02

From Martin Taylor@21:1/5 to All on Fri Apr 16 12:22:47 2021
    Hi good people

After searching around the internet i can find no information on what jumpers i have to change on the a4000 from riscos 3.0 to riscos 4.02 roms... i can find information for a30x0 on jumper configs but nothing for the a4000 and the jumper i have on the
board are LK32, LK31, LK6, LK18, Does anyone know what jumpers should be set to open or closed so the riscos4.02 roms will work ???

    thank you

    Martin

I'm astonished to learn that it's possible to put RISC OS >3.1 on an
A4000 at all -- aren't the hardware assumptions completely incompatible?
(e.g. no 'deep sprite' mode, no ARM6 machine code instructions)

    Probably not

You're correct. RISC OS 3.5+ won't run on an A4000. The hardware is quite different.

    The options are:

    1) Find some RISC OS 3.1 or 3.11 ROMs from another A3010/A3020/A4000. It's
not really worth making extra effort for 3.11 as the changes are very minor. 3.19 was the German language version so you probably don't want that.

    2) Look into the RISC OS 3.20 project, which aims to update the ROM image
    with more modern modules:
    https://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14110
(it may also allow use of a 4MB ROM with extra goodies with some hardware tricks)

Thank you to everyone that replied, of course it wont work i have no idea what i was thinking, i thought i had taken the roms out of a old a3010 that the motherboard went on a few years ago but now thinking about it the was in my old riscpc before the
motherboard failed on that.... so yes that was really stupid of me sorry...... I will look do the RISC OS 3,20 looks a good thing, i will hold onto the old Roms keep them with the A4000 then i can always make it a stock machine if needed.

    Thank you

    Martin
