• Iyonix Not Working

From Matthew Thompson@21:1/5 to All on Tue Feb 16 17:58:37 2021
After many years on non-usage I have dug out my Iyonix - but it doesn't
seem to want to work anymore.

When I switch it on , it starts up as it should do, the drive lights all
flash, there is a whirring noise, the power on light (green) is on and the yellow (hard disc) light is on, but then it stops, nothign else happens.

The machine is on, I can hear it humming and the breeze from the fan, but
it won't get to the desktop. There is no reaction from anything in the USB ports, so something has gone wrong .

I did manage to get it working before Christmas, but it was a struggle but
it did work. This time I can't get it to do anything. I thought if the
keyboard would work , I could do the hold down R or delete on power on,
    but nothing works.

Is there any way of getting this machine to work again ? I don't want to
do much with it, (I have an ARMX6 for normal usage) just check there is no software left on the hard discs (i have two) in it which I might have
missed, and also I want to test a few floppy discs to see if they still
work and if there is anything important on them.

Many thanks in advance for any help and assistance.

    Matthew

Unplug everything from it except power, switch it on and leave it for
about an hour to let it warm up, and expel any humidity. Then try the
reset button, and if that doesn't work, power cycle it again.

If still no luck, try again after unplugging the hard drive power and
    data cables.

I have been having issues with mine for some time now too.

It used to be left on pretty much 24/7 but then, quite recently, it
started losing it's network connection once a day. approximatly every 24
hours. (It connects via DHCP but the Router is set to give it the same
address everytime by locking to it's MAC address)

This means I have to switch off and restart once per day and often it does
not come up properly first time either. It starts up, making the usual
noises and bleeps, but no video. Pressing the reset switch then seems to
    bring it to life.

Network problems are one symptom of a failing Power Supply.

Mine started giving disk errors when large files were written (another symptom).

I do have a brand new PSU available (bought just before my Iyonix
motherboard gave up!), if you want to make me an offer!

    sounds like power supply problems.

More thoughts; unplug all the PCI cards and reset them, the same for the memory. This often cleans the connectors reducing capacitance, allowing
the machine to function. It's something I had to do on my old Risc PC a
lot, as it had a lot of cards. My Iyonix only had 3 PCI cards and 2 Podules.

    I too have a spare PSU :-)

The fan in the original one became very noisy so I bought a replacement
    from CJE.

I was then able to replace the fan and this PSU now in storage.

I had heard that network problems often result as a result of a failing
power supply but to me it seems so strange that it happens so regularly.
It doesn't matter at what time of day I do the re-start, it is always
about 24 hrs later that the problem occurs.

Thanks for the suggestions I will try all of that and see if that can get

Router DHCP expiry set to 24 hours? Failing to re-negotiate?

If all you want is to read the hard drive, and alternative is a (P)ATA
to USB enclosure, which you can connect to any more recent RISC OS machine.

It's the floppy drive I need access to - to check some old discs, see if
    they still work.

I don't really know what I did to be honest, took it all apart , hoovered
out out all the dust, put all back togther, pushed all things into their relevant slots.

That can happen if the capacitors (in the power supply or elsewhere) are failing. It works some of the time and not others, or perhaps not when it's been off for days/weeks, depending on temperature/moisture/etc.

Switched back on and it worked perfectly, no problems. Thanks for all the help/suggestions.

Hope you got what you needed off it, as I wouldn't bank on it being reliable from this point forward.

Of course it could also have been a loose or corroded connection that you
fixed by poking it. In which case you might have fixed it for a good while yet.

    Theo
