• T560: Battery loads only to 25%

    From Alexander Goetzenstein@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 25 15:46:37 2020
    Hi,
    normally, I run Linux (OpenSUSE Tumbleweed), and only two or three times
    a year I boot to Windows 7. Last time I did so, there was a popup asking
    me if I would limit charging the battery to 50% to extend it's lifetime.
    I clicked [OK] assuming that it only affects Windows.

    But when I booted to Linux again, I found that it charged the battery
    only up to 65%. So it seems that the Windows function wrote it somewhere
    to the firmware. Since I did not find an equivalent function withing the
    Linux desktop, I tried to run it in battery mode until it switched off
    to sleep mode. After that, the limit hasn't gone, but now it charges
    only up to 25%.

    Next, I booted into Windows 7 again in the intention to undo the
    charging limit, but did not find something that is looking like that.
    Maybe this depends on my lack of routine using Windows? Anyway, I'm
    still hung at this state.

    What can I do to get my Thinkpad charging to 100% again?

    I'm not sure about Windows. However, on Linux there's a utility called TLP.
    Its page is here: https://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-linux-advanced-power-management.html

    With this and a kernel with acpi call support you should in theory be able
    to run tlp fullcharge and this will set the 100% charge threshold back.

    I have a P50 I'll test with later today and report back. The old thinkpads
    used to have tp_smapi for charge thresholds prior to Tx20 series.

    thx, it seems top work -a little bit. I used
    linux-t560b:~ # tlp fullcharge BAT0
    Setting temporary charge thresholds for BAT0:
    start = 96 (no change)
    stop = 100 (no change)
    Charging starts now, keep AC connected.
    linux-t560b:~ # tlp fullcharge BAT1
    Setting temporary charge thresholds for BAT1:
    start = 96
    stop = 100
    Charging starts now, keep AC connected.

    After that, the battery is charged to 43%. This is better than 25%, but
    less than the 100% I saw before.

    Any ideas?

    maybe there is an option in Windows. Since I know this OS only
    incomplete, there might be someone who can tell me how to get it done
    with Windows?

    Run the Lenovo Windows app Lenovo Vantage. Drop-Down Device / My Device Settings. Under Battery Settings you can choose the Start and Stop
    thresholds, say 85% start and 95% stop.

    seems that I have a different Vantage tool since there are no drop down
    menus. But I found the settings: 96% start, 100% stop, condition OK for
    both batteries, but external battery state 0%? So I tried recalibration,
    but over night it did nothing. It didn't charge the external battery,
    it's still at 0%.

    Maybe it destroyed my battery?
