A friend brought over her Macbook which she is locked out of. She claims
she never changed her password and that it happened after she linked it
to her phone.
All she can do is log-in as guest.
I found that the machine has a BIOS lock so I cannot perform any of the normal reset procedures.
Before I have her take it to the Apple store...anything else I should try?
Ok.
I was able to sign into her account from my own computer but as far as password reset options...the only device listed was her phone.
I went back to her computer and tried the password reset option but the webpage dialog box was blocked by parental controls. From the guest account there is no way to change that without knowing the admin password.
I can't even boot from an OSX install USB stick due to the BIOS lock.
She actually did have the BIOS password written down but that too was incorrect.
I still don't know why linking her phone to her MacBook would have invalidated her p/w. She claims she did not change it.

That's intentional, as it prevents the machine from being useful to strangers.

Please use the correct terminology. It's called a "firmware passcode" -
Macs do not use BIOS.
I still don't know why linking her phone to her MacBook would have invalidated her p/w.i
"Linking" isn't a term that is typically used, so what she actually did
is anyone's guess. Syncing her iPhone with her Mac wouldn't change any passwords. So either she's mistaken, or she's not telling you
everything.

It absolutely does have a firmawre passcode.
She worked for a large corporation that went out of business and was
allowed the keep her company laptop once the IT dept setup a personal
account and removed the company's.
My guess is that she never knew the password and it had simply been set
to automatically log-in and perhaps she simply took it off auto-login.

Okay, but that's not going to allow you to remove the firmware passcode.
And if the drive is encrypted with FileVault, you won't be able to
access anything on it either.
So what are you hoping to do with it once you have it in an external enclosure?

Good news.
Once I got the drive out , I got the model number and finally got the

Which "adapter", specifically?
The machine has an oddball ssd.
It's a 7 x 17 which AFAIK is made for a few specific Mac laptops.
The adapter will take the drive to a standard SATA .
Okay, but that's not going to allow you to remove the firmware passcode.
And if the drive is encrypted with FileVault, you won't be able to
access anything on it either.
So what are you hoping to do with it once you have it in an external enclosure?

As you are well aware, JR, I'm not a "techie"
but do realise that there
must be SOMEWHERE within an Apple computer where, for example, the
Serial Number is stored. If the hard drive is removed and replaced,
Apple can still identify the hardware.
So, in what type of electronic component is the information held?

You haven't told anyone which adapter you are talking about, as far as I
can tell.
I do recall that you mentioned removing the .AppleSetupDone file. But
that's not going to allow you to start up the Mac, since firmware
protection is enabled.

Does that situation pertain in the hardware used to run Microsoft and

A little thought should suggest that that will not work. If it *did*
work, it would make the filevault encryption worthless.
So the point I'm trying to make is that the T2 chip contains the
encryption keys needed to decrypt the SSD. A different T2 will have
different encryption keys.
If you get the SSD out it'll be encrypted. Without the key, you don't

I never stated that File Vault was used to encrypt the drive...
File
Vault and firmware password are two separate procedures.
I have cut and pasted this directly from the Apple help page:
Your Mac asks for the firmware password only when attempting to start up
from a storage device other than the one selected in Startup Disk preferences, or when starting up from macOS Recovery. Enter the firmware password when you see the lock and password field:
Startup screen showing lock icon and password field.
That said, the owner informed me that all her data are backed up and I
am free to experiment at will.
She does not want to spend money on a ten year old computer that she got
free to take it to the Apple store.
Even if I do reset her operating system password,
she is intent on
getting a new computer anyway.
If I succeed, all I will have done is buy her a little time.
If I don't succeed, the couple bucks I spent on the adapter will allow
me to at least format the drive and use it elsewhere.
So the point I'm trying to make is that the T2 chip contains the
encryption keys needed to decrypt the SSD. A different T2 will have
different encryption keys.

I never stated that File Vault was used to encrypt the drive...File
Vault and firmware password are two separate procedures.
Filevault encryption is the default on Macs with T2 chips and is an
obvious thing for a company's security policy to have set up anyway. So
I think you can reasonably safely assume it is encrypted.
If I don't succeed, the couple bucks I spent on the adapter will allow
me to at least format the drive and use it elsewhere.
Good luck.

As to the firmware, AFAIK, that's on the T2 chip, not the ssd.
One tutorial I saw said the T2 chip could be replaced in order to
get by a lost passcode.
They suggested taking one out of a scrap MacBook.
Without the key, you don't
get to see the filesystems on *any* kind of machine.

Good luck.
Chris
I just turned the machine back on to double check.
File Vault is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY turned ***off***

That NO-SPAM idiot however is staying in my killfile.
Good news. A few here ...without even seeing the machine...made the *assumption* that the drive is encrypted.
The first thing I did was
check that but what the heck... I double checked just now and File Vault
is set to NOT encrypted.
It will be a few more days before the adapter gets here at which point I should be able to reset the operating system password from Linux.
A few here also made the assumption that I am trying to reset the
firmware password. NO, I am not.
I am trying to reset the operating system password or simply setup a new administrative account.
The No-SPAM moron is in my killfile so I will not see any of his idiot
posts. I see a few here trying to argue with him. No use in trying to
reason with someone that far mentally ill.

Okay, but that's not going to allow you to remove the firmware

And if the drive is encrypted with FileVault, you won't be able to
access anything on it either.
So what are you hoping to do with it once you have it in an external

You haven't told anyone which adapter you are talking about, as far as I
can tell.
I do recall that you mentioned removing the .AppleSetupDone file. But
that's not going to allow you to start up the Mac, since firmware
protection is enabled.
As you are well aware, JR, I'm not a "techie" but do realise that there
must be SOMEWHERE within an Apple computer where, for example, the
Serial Number is stored. If the hard drive is removed and replaced,
Apple can still identify the hardware.
So, in what type of electronic component is the information held?
Problem is, apple does not tell what kind of sensors is present

Some type of SMC-Bus chip. You can detect lots of those (mainly temp
sensors, fan-rpm sensors etc) with lm_sensors from linux property.
Problem is, apple does not tell what kind of sensors is present
additionally. Basically all mainbaords, apple or otherwise, have those sensors and also id info, stacked away in chips connected to the
SMC-bus, which is just some type of I2C-bus

My beef was not with him.
Though he did not have the knowledge to help me
he did correct me when I referred to the firmware password as a bios password.
What I did think weird were the people who said I would not be able to
do this because the drive was encrypted...
even though I stated three times it was not
For them to have presumed soi
Anyway.
She picked up her machine today and was very thankful.
I don't expect to be monitoring this thread anymore.
(Oops)
And after I saw the drive, found the folder where .applesetupdone is located but from the gui, even with enabling "see hidden files"
it was not visible.
Finally, since I thankfully had MC installed, I was easily able to
rename it from terminal.
So, although it ended up being simple enough, it did take a bit of
effort to get there.
Also. As long as I'm being dumb enough to argue with you, I might as well mention that quite a few here also assumed I was trying to crack the firmware password. As I also stated...from my Googje search, I stated that the only way to do that was to replace the (I used the wrong word) BIOS chip. (I should have said firmware.)
I mentioned that not only did I not just happen to have one, I also don't have access to a de-soldering station so that would not be an option.
So, the only way to reset the machine was by putting the drive in another machine.

not only is that *not* the only way, but that's the worst possible way

Indeed. Those lists are spot on and one would have to believe some giant conspiracy against snit to defend snit.
The lists cross several different usenet groups, have hundreds of different people mostly saying the same things about snit and so forth.
And even if someone were to deem those lists a set up against snit, all that person has to do is observe snit's recent posts to usenet and it's trivial to match them up with the "Snit's Methods For Lying" list.
The truth is snit is exactly the person described in the various snit lists.

Once you clarify exactly what you mean - be blunt and write to us
an explanation as you would a five year old American. No offense
but generally speaking a typical American kid at the age of five
isn't doing much with their brains - some might even say many
opportunities for learning are being wasted due to the ackward
way in which the parents interact (or not?) With their
children.
Every American we know has issues of some sort. Usually something
to do with their childhoods. Snit and Gremlin are both good
examples. They are both Americans. And both of them have their
own quirks or issues. To deny it is to lie to yourself. We know
Gremlins story. We've met both of his parents at some point along
the journey. While we don't personally know Snit as we do Gremlin
it's not hard for any of us to make reliable educated guesses. We
have Gremlin as one example to go by. As well as some others in
the group - you don't presently know any of us by our own handles
and we can't think of a reason for that to change for
you.
You do know of Gremlin and Snit so they can and have been used as
examples of our fucked up Americans. As a brit yourself you would
have to agree Americans do things differently yes?
The only poster here besides David Brooks who routinely writes bullshit they cannot support about others is you. That's a *LIE*!
Please explain how our writing is or was a lie? We have Snit dead
to rights as Americans say? Lying his whiny little arse off and
attempting to support his lie! We have him red handed! Lying on
specific posters multiple times. We have him creating total
malarky labels to falsely describe atleast two posters here AND
taking advantage of the floodbot to search engine seed false
statements he created to describe them. If that's not bad enough
for a short period of time he started to deny that he was infact
the source of the very comments he invited readers to search for
via their favorite search engine.
These are all things we can prove he has done here David. We
aren't making a single false accusation towards him or anyone
else. You are fully aware of both of the threads which involve
snit lying intentionally about another poster. You were involved
in one of them, David. And you know for an absolute fact that
snit not only falsely accused him of writing a direct lie he also
lied when he claimed you had asked him to do no such thing.
David, snit stalled Gremlin for several days about apologizing
for having falsely written that Gremlin had written a direct lie
about you. When snit finally did write an apology it had nothing
to do with what he wrote. It was complete garbage. Snit did not
apologize to Gremlin (or you) for falsely writing that Gremlin
had written a direct lie about you. Snit still refuses to
apologize for falsely claiming that Gremlin had an actual fucking
copy of the bot itself. When the entire post Gremlin made is read
though the first few lines clearly state that Gremlin doesn't
have the bot in any form and was already calling snit out for
having put words in Gremlins mouth. David anybody can see that
the full post snit did a little creative lifting from did not in
any way support snits multiple accusations he made about Gremlin
having the bot. Snit lied multiple times and quoted some of
Gremlins own reply - completely out of context - to try to
support the entire story he concocted about Gremlin and the
bot.
We can prove he (snit) did this too, David. Our signature shares a
link which proves both of his (snits) lies happened as we wrote.
We arenn't including ourselves in the tally because we are a
disposable handle and aren't really a regular or even a fair
target.
Shadow lies on a daily basis and Wolffan and Dustin lie whenever they turn up here.
Let us go one by one here then. What specifically has Shadow lied
about?
Same question for the other two you listed.
We would also like to know why you address him as you did and not
his posting handle Gremlin? We are under the impression it's an
ongoing sign of disrespect in a non adult manner. Are we far off
the mark or spot on?

NO EVIDENCE has been provided to show WHERE these pseudonyms have been used.
Can you prove otherwise?
Once you clarify exactly what you mean - be blunt and write to us
an explanation as you would a five year old American. No offense
but generally speaking a typical American kid at the age of five
isn't doing much with their brains - some might even say many
opportunities for learning are being wasted due to the ackward
way in which the parents interact (or not?) With their
children.
You can see quite clearly just how hard I was trying to hide.
As well as some others in
the group - you don't presently know any of us by our own handles
and we can't think of a reason for that to change for
you.
Dustin Cook is the only person I have ever 'met' who has lost *TWO*
fathers. Which one of his fathers did YOU meet?
You do know of Gremlin and Snit so they can and have been used as
examples of our fucked up Americans. As a brit yourself you would
have to agree Americans do things differently yes?
Yes, Americans are generally disliked all around the world.
The only poster here besides David Brooks who routinely writes bullshit >>>> they cannot support about others is you.
Snit has personally assured me that he is NOT responsible for the "fretwizzer" bot.
"Steve Carroll mixes up his fretwizzer and fretwizzen accounts again". https://groups.google.com/g/comp.os.linux.advocacy/c/LSBFYbzYm1g/m/7F6glDclLgAJ?pli=1
Dustin Cook claimed that he'd be able to pinpoint the ACTUAL perpetrator
but he has failed so to do.
I suggest you concentrate only on posts which Snit has made here in ACW
We arenn't including ourselves in the tally because we are a
disposable handle and aren't really a regular or even a fair
target.
Shadow lies on a daily basis and Wolffan and Dustin lie whenever they turn >>> up here.
Let us go one by one here then. What specifically has Shadow lied
about?
Shadow claims I drink. I don't.
Same question for the other two you listed.
They claim I drink. I do not.
We would also like to know why you address him as you did and not
his posting handle Gremlin? We are under the impression it's an
ongoing sign of disrespect in a non adult manner. Are we far off
the mark or spot on?
I address Dustin by the name he claimed was his by birthright. It's
published here in bright lights for anyone to see:- https://i.imgur.com/i5tiWdT.jpg He should be proud of what he achieved
but, instead, he hangs his head in shame for the way he has behaved

This speaks very poorly of how Gremlin sees kids!
Gremlin insists he does not think it is me but that I somehow control it.
Does not make any sense to me at all.
Carroll has done so several times.
And he used to use the "bot" account topost other things before he was running the bot.
Also used several otheraccounts for the bot, and with some of those also posted non-bot posts.
Add tothat he was working with a guy named Sandman to make an "auto-responder"client (or whatever they called that bot).
Or has not admitted he has... it is not unlikely he did track it back to Carroll with proof but they co-troll together.

We didn't provide a link to a feud. You suggested that we stick to
