Thunderbird is free. It's really a mail client with a newsgroup
    interface built in.

I haven't used it for mail since ... a long, long time ... and that was
    under Windows.

I did do binaries with it back then - but don't recall if it's 'kept
    up'. (Probably is).

    Best is Hogwasher.

a little less than Thoth - and a little more.

slrn is free, open source, and has worked reliably for many of us
through many macOS versions, including the latest and greatest.

There's a modern Mac Usenet client called Usenapp that I've looked at
before and seems very polished and fully-featured, and doesn't cost
much. It's on sale for 20% off right now, at €23.98:

Currently the two very good, and well supported Usenet clients available for macOS are:

    Usenapp<https://www.usenapp.com>

    and

    Hogwasher<https://www.asar.com/hogwasher.html>

Neither are free. However, both provide good support, and regular free updates.

And bad at both. The news client in particular is very sub-standard and
    has atrocious filtering.

Free pretty much means command-line apps, or outdated unsupposrted apps
that still (I think) work like Unison.

slrn is what I use, it is dead simple to install, works very well, but
it does require opening a terminal and typing 'slrn' which is a bit
    complicated for some people.
