• sparsebundle time machine backup locked

From Robert Peirce@21:1/5 to All on Sun Aug 15 09:01:40 2021
I back up one of my computers to time machine drives on two other
computers [redundancy!] as sparsebundles. Every once-in-a-while one of
these gets "locked." Fortunately I have another so I just remove the
locked one and copy the other over. This works fine but I'm wondering
if there is a way to unlock the sparsebundle or does the lock mean it is corrupted in some way?

I've "googled" this without any luck so I'm hoping somebody here knows something about it.

it's corrupted, which is why it was locked. it can be repaired and
unlocked but it's a major hassle.

    no you didn't

Yea, I did. I tried several different searches without any useful
results. It may be I didn't use the right keywords, but that doesn't
    mean I didn't try.

Yea, I did. I tried several different searches without any useful

    Well, I tried this search:

    https://www.startpage.com/

    <snipped>

I use "google" as a verb because everyone else in the cosmos seems to
but I try not to use it as a search resource, spying on me bugs the
    fuck out of me.

    WWW.IxQuick.com or www.duckduckgo.com to reduce Google's stranglehold
    on the planets.

Yes, I know, Ixquick aint much better if any but it's a small
    rebellion against The Machine.

I'm only small, myself, so small rebellions are all I can manage.

    It's a cruel world.

    Well, I tried this search:

    https://www.startpage.com/do/search?cat=web&language=english&query=locked+sparsebundle+time+machine+backup&pl=ff

and got this is my first response:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7847888

    this as the second:

    https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/18482/repair-time-machine-sparsebundle-that-will-no-longer-mount

    and a shitload more.

It took zero time for the search and just about the same to type the
keywords. "locked sparsebundle time machine backup" into the searchy
    boxy thingy.

    I hope this helps.

I actually use Google. Yes, I know they are tracking me but so does
Amazon. Amazon often brings to my attention things I might find
interesting but never thought of. Google not so much.

I appreciate your concern. I'm more concerned about the government
tracking me. After all, Amazon can just suggest things to me. I don't
have to buy them. The government can kill me or throw me in prison if I
    don't do what it says.

I was using Google. It isn't always the best but mostly it works. I'm
    not familiar with startpage.

I've used other "standard" search engines, DuckDuck, Yahoo, Bing, etc.
but never startpage. I use Google because it usually seems to have
    better coverage than the others.

I just checked and startpage isn't a "default" option in Safari, which
may be why I never heard of it.

I tried this and checked the responses. They didn't provide any more
info than I got from Google. It appears redundancy is the only reliable solution.

Amazon only does that to me on the "Other things people have bought"
part of the pages. Am I missing out on things? I do have ad-blockers
    running.

Amazon do not have governmental powers *yet*! :)

Bozos has rockets. The ex-USSR places may have warheads they don't
need and sometimes lack funds. This is not something to worry about
    ... much.

I wonder whether he ever thinks about doing a Luthor or Doc Doom or
something? *I* wouldn't but I don't have the bone that allows me to
    make billions.
