• Future of 2200 systems

From kurt.duncan@juno.com@21:1/5 to All on Thu May 21 18:26:48 2020
I haven't seen a lot of noise regarding updates lately - 18.0 is a bit old, and I only saw a single reference to 19.0.

Then again, I haven't been paying close attention.

Is there a future for these systems?

Does there have to be updates, even if they are not really needed, in
order for it to have a future? If it's stable and completely functional
isn't it best to just let it continue to do the job?

In this world, the answer to the first question is some amount of yes, even if it's just the occasional updates to allow the 2200 ecosystem to continue to interact with the rest of the technology out there, which does change frequently. Much of the later
technology seems to be centered around leveraging SAIL (even if only for the OS), and improving the ability to interact with whatever else is in the data-center. But as I said, I haven't noticed much new... perhaps they're focused on finishing up the
date conversion - and *that* is something that will definitely break if you just let it continue doing its job.

Unisys' release cadence now seems to be every 18 to 24 months:
18.0 was released in July 2018 -- 22 months ago.
    17.0 was released in Sept 2016 -- 22 months before 18.0.

So I expect 19.0 will be released soon. But I'm only a customer, so I don't really know.

I think releasing every 18 to 24 months is fine. I wouldn't want it to stretch longer than two years.

As an ex-customer - the site migrated away and I retired - I no longer
have access to the Unisys database and the Release Announcements but
won't they give you a clue as to when 19.0 is going to arrive?
It must be fairly soon because the document "ClearPath OS 2200 2028
TDATE$ Remediation" 8225 6678-000 was released in April and is marked as belonging to Release 19.0.

CP 19.0 was released on July 28, 2020. CP 18 is supported until July 31, 2023. I think that CP 20 will be released in two years (2022) from now.
