• Framebuffer replacement TGX - S24 on SS5

From Michael Moeller@21:1/5 to All on Fri Aug 19 20:45:42 2016
    Hi,

I'd like to replace a TGX card by an S24 on a SS5
with an attached Samsung LCD monitor.
To meet the requirements, the resolution has to be
    changed from 1024x768x60 to 1024x768x70.

I suppose the S24 card is detected at 'power on', but
I dont know what happens to the resolution and refresh
    rate already adjusted.

    Since the S24 definitely doesn't like 60 Hz, I'm
wondering what's the correct approach to accomplish
    this.

    Regards
    Michael

Can you log in via a serial port or via the net?

You could try ffbconfig, if the system has created /dev/fbs/ffb0
    on detecting the card.

And -- if it hasn't, try "touch /reconfig" and then rebooting.

Or -- maybe it is the one which comes up as /dev/fbs/cgsix (It
has been a while since I last did much with a SS5). Anyway -- it is
possible to set the resolution with something like this using the eeprom command from a booted system, or the "set" command from the OpenBoot
    PROM.

    output-device=screen:r1920x1080x60

except obviously, that is not one which matches your screen.

Hmm ... the old FEH says "maximum resolution 1152x900

And that is what the S24 is happiest to do. No chance to get
your monitor to go to that resolution? Some certainly will, but not
    all.

    Good Luck,
    DoN

To meet the requirements, the resolution has to be
    changed from 1024x768x60 to 1024x768x70.

Since you're already using a non-default screen resolution with your
TGX, chances are the OpenPROM environment variable `output-device` is
set to `screen:r1024x768x64` (64 is not a typo). Simply change it to `screen:r1024x768x70` before putting the TCX board (when running on a
TGX, this setting will use a 66Hz refresh rate).

Thanks, this is exactly what I had in mind.

Aftter replacement it comes up with a colored logo: 24 bit TrueColor
    but then:

NOTICE: Can't find driver for console framebuffer
    ...
    ...
The X-server can not be started at display :0...

There is no ffbconfig and 'touch /reconfig' is without effect.
I've set the resolution to the appropriate values by eeprom
in advance which obviously works, because the monitor doesn't
    complain.

Seems like I have to install some driver from the systems CD?

    Btw, this is Solaris 2.6.

If you really need that lower resolution, ignore this article...

My impression is that the TGX can also do 1280x1024x{various frame
rates}, and that that's pretty well supported by LCD monitors,
especially Samsung Multisync monitors. (Those monitors can also sync to
Sun's 1152x900, though the result is a bit ugly.) I only mention this
because it looks like you have all the pieces to run at higher
resolution if you wished to do so.

Thanks. Thats right, but I'm limited by my LCD display, which is
very picky about the refresh rate. Most of the Sun resolutions is
    non-VESA.

After installing the tcx drivers all works as expected,
although changing the workspaces is a little slow now.
