I played the first and second Dune games only. I love the soundtrack
from the first one. Dune 2 was my first RTS. It probably was for many
    I suspect.

You could probably just have posted this over in .action ;) No real
need for separate groups nowadays. There isn't enough of us posting
    anymore. :-P

I've played them all, but the original remains the most memorable to
me, for exactly the same reason: its soundtrack was fantastic. Dune 2
did have that awesome intro though.

Beyond that, I never cared much for the gameplay of any of the games.
The original game's mix of strategy and adventure left both halves
feeling half-baked. Dune 2 of course invented the modern RTS, but even
for the day it was very rough around the edges: the core concept was
solid but its implementation was poor. This was corrected by Dune
2000, which just revamped the controls and graphics to modern
standards, but by then we had "Warcraft" and "Command & Conquer" and
"Total Annhilation" and God knows how many other RTS franchises, and
it again got lost in the crowd. And Emperor dragged the franchise into
3D, and it was so ugly that it pretty much killed the series ;-)

You could probably just have posted this over in .action ;) No real

We should just collapse the hierarchy and start posting in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games; no .action, no .strategy, no. adventure, no
nothing. Just .games, like the net-gods intended. I never was in favor
    of the split anyway ;-)

Oh boy that intro. I watched it over and over back in the day. It
    really impressed me.

The planet Arrakis. Known as Dune. Land of sand. Home of the Spice
Melange... or something like that. The woman they chose to narrate
that intro was perfect. Well, I thought so anyway.

And yes, it is the soundtrack I most remember from the original, not
    the gameplay itself.

It was MIDI? My memory says it was some form of tracker music. Maybe
that was the CD-ROM re-release (did they use CD-Audio then?). It's
been too long since I last played the original, but I'm in no rush to
dig out the CD-ROM and fiddle with DOSBox just to check.

    <digs out CD-ROM anyway>

No, you are right; MIDI. Sounds amazing on the Gravis; the developers
did a great job disguising its synthetic origins.

I'd forgotten about that double-interlaced video they used. Back then
I thought it was a cool stylistic choice rather than something used
because computers couldn't render full-screen video fast enough ;-)

Or - more recently - Quantic Dream.

Apparently there has ever been a market for games that values great
    production values over entertaining gameplay.

Unfortunately, it seems that I am /part/ of that market because I keep
    buying these games too. ;-/

But the graphics are just so darned PRETTY!
