I'm still working on this one.
Here's what I did to beat the mission.
1st Town: Build Quarry
1st Town: Recruit 4xSettlers + Kohan
Send to build village next to the fort to the southeast
immediately. Let them supply in while building next to the fort.
1st Town: Recruit 6xShadelings + Vashti
Explore the edges while supplying.
1st Town: Recruit 6xEngineers + Melee Kohan
Explore the edges while supplying.
1st Town: Build Lumber Mill
1st Town: Build Blacksmith
1st Town: Upgrade to Ceyah City
Send Engineers and Shadelings to supply near the neutral Council
Town in east corner. Set to Combat Mode while waiting
2nd Village: Build Quarry 2nd Town: Recruit 4xSettlers + Kohan
Send to supply in south of town
1st Town: Recruit 6xSkeleton Warriors + Kohan
Send to supply near neutral town in east corner
Attack neutral Council Town in east corner
Only wait for your Engineers and Shadelings to fully form.
Send in the Skeleton Warriors behind them
Build Gold Mine with Engineers
3rd Town (Council): Build Quarry
Destroy Wasp Hive to south of Settlers with Shadelings and Skeleton Warriors
Don't wait for them to fully heal. 4 units + Kohan for both
companies should be enough.
3rd Town (Council): Build Wood Mill
Build 4th village south of fort near lake
Explore west with regiments as they become fully healed.
1st City: Upgrade Carpentry Guild
Attack Druga Enclave to the west of the 4th village.
1st City: Build Library
Repair Druga Enclave with Engineers
After that you soon meet the enemy and things will get chaotic, so there
isn't much point describing exactly what I did. I recommend heading
south from the Druga Enclave to try to capture Guari Stronghold to the
west of the mountains. Start enlisting archer companies. At some point,
build a village on the north side of the small lake that Druga Enclave
is on the south side of. You'll have to clear the Slaan there first.
This will be an important defensive point, so you might want to build
a barracks and a wall.
You should concentrate your offense in the isolated southern corner.
There's four cities there including the Gauri Stronghold I mentioned previously. Once you've captured them and then gone on to secure the Druga Enclave directly to the west "defensive point" village you've pretty much
won the game. You just then need to mop up the settlements to north and
all the settlements on the western side of the map. With your "homeland"
now secure this should be pretty easy.
Be sure to use your Kohan from the start. Putting one in charge of a
settler company may sound pointless, but it saves you from having to
pay for the captain unit instead. Having a Kohan in charge of the other
units makes them much stronger. While the Shadelings company with Vashti
in charge are still pretty fragile, her summoning more shadelings makes
them much more effective in battle.
Be sure to pay close attention to battles, and retreat any units before
the leader dies, especially if it's a Kohan. Effective use the retreat
order is very important in Kohan. If your archers are engaged before
your melee units, pull them out and let melee units engage them first.
There's going to be some battles, and managing them so your units come out mauled but still alive, while you're wiping as many of their units as
you can, is key to winning the war. On the defensive side of things
try let your militia enage first, and then stiffen their defence with
your companies.
I didn't build any zombie companies, but since you end up with a lot of
extra company slots, building a couple of them for defensive purposes
may not be a bad idea. However they're way to slow to use effectively on offense, and the enemy will have a number of units that do bonus damage
to Ceyah units, meaning they'll die pretty quickly. They should be OK
for stiffening militia defence however. I wouldn't recruit any mixed engineer/archer companies, as they work at cross purposes. Engineers have
a bonus for attacking settlements, while archers get a penalty.
Finally don't worry about upgrading quarries, or your stone production generally. One gold for one stone is a fair price to pay. It's more
important to use your slots for other things. After building the three quarries that I mentioned in my little walkthrough above I didn't bother building any more. In fact I ended up selling the quarry in the starting
town to make room for something else.
Finally, a couple of caveats. First, I was replaying the mission so I
had all the Kohan and technologies that I had at the end of the campaign.
That why I avoided naming specifc Kohan, because other than Vashti,
I'm not sure which ones you'd have at this point. I only used about
half my available Kohan, in order to put the game more on par where
you'd be. Second, someone who's much better at Kohan would probably give significantly better advice than me. I'm a mediocre player at best,
but I've been able to complete the campaign three times now, so I've
been in your shoes three times now and managed to beat this mission.
Here's my saved film from that mission:
http://www.csclub.uwaterloo.ca:11068/dist/Mortal%20Troubles%20Thursday,%20June%2023,%202016%202,39,55%20PM.TGF
Download it and put in the "Films" subdirectory of the directory where
you've installed Kohan: Arhiman's Gift. For example if you have the
Steam version and you installed Steam in the default directory then
you'd put it in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\kohan ahrimans gift\Films
This is a tough mission, but it's not that hard to beat once you got a
hang of playing Kohan.
