• Question about AppleTalk

On early Mac Systems, the AppleTalk driver was called .MPP. Despite much googling and delving though Inside Macintosh, I've been unable to figure
out what MPP actually stands for. Anyone know?

Somehow “Mac Peer-to-Peer” comes to mind. However, that was dug out of deep recesses of my memory, and is probably something quite different.

Hmmm. My guess was 'Macintosh Packet(?) Protocol', but that was just a
guess. I'm trying to find something official. For all I know it's
something entirely random, like Mezcal Party Pack.

The fellow who designed it was not happy with the assignment. He wanted
to work on schedulers and other real time aspects of the system.

When he had to name the extension, he used the initials of his mother in
law, 1 letter off. (Nancy Quincy Quartermaine).

Apple engineering and marketing didn't catch on for a while. When they
did the file name extension was too deeply coded and all over release candidates and too much of a mess to cleanup.

    Thanks!

I had just starting sifting through the old ADC technical notes, which
was proving quite a challenge. After finally managing to get MacWrite
4.5 up and running I suddenly discovered I also needed MS Word 3.0. Fortunately, I no longer have to cross that hurdle!

An aside: Neither Inside Macintosh Vol. 2 nor Inside Macintosh:
Networking answered this, but what really surprised me is that the
expression "MPP" does not occur *anywhere* in Inside AppleTalk.

    Macintosh Protocol Package?

That is correct. It replaced the earlier Apple Protocol Package.

    Source?

And, there's no "file name extension" on early Macs. The .MPP driver was included in the system file.

I just searched through the original Inside Macintosh Books but I didn't find
a word about what .MPP stands for. Maybe Macintosh Packet Protocol? Just a guess, though.
