• ATI 8514 Ultra - Sold immediately.

From lharris428@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jan 1 13:06:20 2022
Saw an ATI 8514 Ultra sell almost immediately for $299 https://www.ebay.com/itm/353836292352

Any ever experience this card? Always wondered if this card was fast in Windows or DOS. It's AVE so doesn't seem like it would be useful, did it take over planar video despite being AVE?

What is "AVE" in this context?

The more time that I spend looking at that document, the more that I
    like it.

It's elegantly simple. It answers many questions. I really like it.

    Thank you.

I've added AVE to my ever growing glossary.

I've enjoyed an Eric Schlaepher ("TubeTimeUS" - he did a reminder of what he covered in 2021) tweet on the 'MME' bus portion: https://twitter.com/TubeTimeUS/status/1417676242174636034

    Yep.

I've been enjoying Eric's work for a while now.

But thank you for the connection to the context of this conversation. I
find that helps when learning things. :-)

I am the one who picked out the 8514 adapter. I have 2 if someone is interested.

The video extension on the MCA bus is a gender-bender, you can actually
drive a video adapter DAC FROM the system-board -OR- drive the
system-board DAC from the video adapter.

BUT... in this case [8514/A on a 70/80] the system-board VGA is fed to
the 8514/A, and the 8514/A provides the higher resolutions. Classical
    AVE function.
