• IBM PS/2 Modell 80 Restart to collecting

From David Reichelt@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jun 28 12:46:19 2023
    Dear group,

As I am new to the group, I would like to introduce myself.

As a young teenager, I got old IBMs from my uncles and made them fit
again. After that came 20 years of a high affinity with Sun computers. I thought these were very pretty and very well made, however I fell into a
hole every time because I had no assignment for them after they were
    repaired.

    I'm just a DOS/Windows person.

A very nice man gave me two PS/2 model 80s. Both are Type 111. After 30
years I'm going back to my beginnings.

    I'll start with two questions:

    1.
A Model 80 is locked. We have the key for the other one, but not for the second. Is there a CLEAN way to pick the lock? And is the lock still for
    sale? Anyone have any ideas?

With kinds from the Facebook PS/2 group i bought this

    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07TLK5LRN?psc=1&smid=A29I6D3V6NPO6A&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp

and will try it this weekend.

    2.
As an IBM returnee, I lost track of the external SCSI connection. I do
have a mca card with a 25 pin. Can I use my Micro DB50 and Micro DB68
SUN SCSI Harddisks and CD-ROM? I did not find ANY Adapter-Cable.

    3.

Unfortunately, my last problem is my worst problem. I only have one
floppy drive for BOTH Model 80's. I tried to fix this. The repair was
done by replacing all five electrolytic capacitors. I didn't do a good
job with my first repair, but electrically everything is measurably
clean now. HOWEVER, the floppy still doesn't work.

    I have two big wishes:

    a) I would like to buy two refurbished working floppy drives. can
someone help me there I would be very grateful, since I can't get any
    further without the floppy drives.

    b) an alternative would be if I could get a complete parts list in
addition to the PS/2 floppy to standard floppy adapter so that I could
cleanly install a standard floppy in the PS/2. This should include the
carriage and eject button, right? And if so, does anyone have templates
or parts for sale and knows which template goes with which standard floppy?

Of course I would like to buy the native floppy.

If someone reads this post twice, I would like to apologize, I also
posted this post on Facebook, but unfortunately received little
    feedback, except for the pictures.

Greetings and to a nice togetherness, David

Uh, wow. You mean the connector on the hard drive itself is HPDB50 or
HPDB68? If so, IBM never had anything like that, all I've seen is the 50
pin header or a 68 pin Molex as the drive mounted SCSI connector.

    MAYBE...

    Just for completeness. Or aggravation.

Your experiences [and hopefully, success!] with the tubular lock may be
    helpful to Model 95 users.

    Hi,

they appear from time to time:

    https://www.ebay.de/itm/234255622241
    https://www.ebay.de/itm/404202805783
    https://www.ebay.de/itm/323829914054
    https://www.ebay.de/itm/374013133363

But don't ask me, what might be the right one.

If you want to test the PS/2 first, i'd go for an adapter: https://github.com/schlae/PS2FloppyAdapter https://texelec.com/product/ibm-ps2-to-standard-floppy-adapter/

Or you can try to repair it; in 4/5 cases it's not more than cleaning the heads, changing the smd caps and make the drive mechanics go 'fluffig' :]

SCSI - hm, if you mean the external connector, it can get difficult with cards like 'SPOCK' (non-standard C60 i guess?). For mine i had to import a cable from Louis. Guess it depends what card the Model 80 came with. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Regards,
    Stefan

I suspect that a cylinder lock decoding tool, as shown on some of the LockPickingLawyer videos on YouTube, would allow you to "pick the lock". However, there's an easier way in that costs you nothing. Take a good look at the case cover of the open
Model 80 so that you can see how the lock latch engages in the case. Next, set your open Model 80 case cover on a carpeted floor and practice leaning your weight into it so that it flexes outward in the middle. Once you have the feel for this, do the
same flexing operation on the locked Model 80 and sharply pull on the back middle of the cover so that either the bottom latches pop out or the key latch skips over the inner catch and you are done. Back in the day I did this regularly when keys were
lost, I could pop open a Model 60 or 80 in seconds.
