• HP Support = Dumpster fire

    From Louis Ohland@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 3 07:15:45 2023
    Researching PCIe ethernet for my latest forlorn hope. My, that HP quad
    port looks beefy... Way over spec, but it's frugal. Let's search for
    what it is... Uh oh, HP support... Warning, Will Robinson! Warning!

    If Carly Fiorina could have made HP support useable, I'd have gladly
    voted for her. Epic FAIL... Better yet, anything over ten years old is
    not supported. In my experience, anything over ten years old is memory
    holed.

    People use those quad-port NICs (Intel chipset) with a SFF system to make firewalls under pfSense and OPNsense. They do the job well. But overwise, it is overkill for you.

    When I feel that my lashed-up system is TOO fast, I'll take your
    suggestion and think about it.

    What NON HP and/or Dell NICs resemble my desired adapter? I want
    someplace with an actual support site with files...

    Yeah, these days it's essentially:

    HP = no support
    Dell = minimal support

    But it depends on the product type and market segment, so YMMV.

    Intel has a decent support for legacy products, including NICs.

    Don't forget Lenovo - the ThinkCentres from the time of the hand-off aren't found on their site, but it seems to be a moderate amount of support for the legacy products since.

    From my point of view:
    HP -> Support only with a contract (e.g. Server BIOS Updates) and they dumped all of my beloved HPUX-content :(
    DELL -> kina OK, no support contract needed
    Intel -> dumped a lot of legacy stuff; use https://archive.org/details/downloadcenter.intel.com instead

    My son spent good money for one of those cards of Ehay
    , I only needed another single port NIC.

    I wendt with the Plugable USB3-E1000.

    The bigger issue right now is NTLM 2 support.
