• The Steve Jobs demo of NextSTEP

From Joacim Melin@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 21 12:06:41 2020
    Hello,

It seems like forever ago but it must have been 15 years I ran a website
called the NeXT Information Archive where I collected all kinds of files related to NeXT and NeXTSTEP. I scanned tons of material and others sent me stuff to. One of the things I was sent was a VHS tape in NTSC with Steve Jobs demonstrating NeXTSTEP, I think it was version 2.0. I did my best to digitize this video and put it on my website and eventually it found it's way to
    Youtube (this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j02b8Fuz73A. The "tracking..." message is from the Samsung VHS player I had at the time).

Long story short - I still have the tape. I have no way to digitize it since I don't have the hardware for it but it's a shame that it's just sitting here when it can be put to better use.

(It was NeXTSTEP 3.0, not 2.0. My bad.)

I'm willing to send this to anyone who can digitize it properly and get it online in the best possible quality.

Get in touch if that's you. Email me at hi (a) joacim dot net.

Well, I am gobsmacked - I remember NIA very well! It was pretty much the
center of the NeXT hobbyist community in that time period - many thanks
for running it! I'll have to fire up my '040 Cube and pull up the
address from my OmniWeb bookmarks file...

Was the peak.org NeXT archive still in existence at that time? And what
do you think of the nextcomputers.org site (forums & files archive)?

The address back in the day was http://next.z80.org. I later registered openstep.se and migrated the whole thing there but I gave up soon after since my home built webserver could'n cope with the load and the forum got hacked time and time again. It was a very fun time.

Nextcomputers.org was actually based on my site. Lots of the files from my
site is the files they offer there and I gave them everything to carry on running something for the NeXT community. I can't remember if they took over the forum too.

This is what my site looked like back in the day:

You can find it on Archive.org too:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20030608130931/http://next.z80.org/

When I ran the site we also did a magazine. One issue only since no one had time to carry on but it was fun:

Thanks for creating that fantastic site, it was my main source of
information in all those roaring years of NeXT. I also have the NeXTstep
3 demo videotape, and in recent years I seem to have digitized it.
If I find my video file, will I send it to you?

For anyone else reading this: Lucio and I have emailed about this. Besides him offering me his digitized version I have arranged for a company digitizing my 20+ year old NTSC VHS tape. I spoke with them today and they will give that
old VHS tape the royal treatment of cleaning the tape and then digitizing it
to a USB stick that they will send to me. I will publish both rips to my FTP site, ftp.fidonet.io, as soon as I have them.
