• Grimoire : Heralds of the Winged Exemplar - It's out!

    It came out.

But seems there's little fanfare, even here, not even a post really about it. I've played about 10 hours so far, despite the sound effects being grating, the UI being clunky but usable, and the graphics being a little questionable for 1996 standards (
well, Wizardry never really looked good anyway). I found myself enjoying it. You're fairly open to stroll about in the rather open world. Yeah, I know a lot of games are open world nowadays. But they all seem to take stride in just being large squares
with attractions riddled about them, and empty space between those attractions. Every map here has a host of secrets to be found and even though every corner is a right angle, it just manages to feel like a place otherwise. Maybe the simplicity and
limitations of older games invited to fill the place in more with imagination and allowed for more creativity despite the restrictions of a grid.

The combat is the standard DRPG affair, but it feels a bit more mechanically expanded over Wiz 7, with 8 over 6 dudes. I mean there's nothing spectacular so far, there's plenty of trash mobs to autofight through. But it isn't braindead. Some enemies have
some interesting gimmicks on them, i.e. brigands will call in reinforcements constantly if they aren't wiped out fast enough. But most fights don't feel like they drag out at least.

I’m about 10 hours in, and I’ll admit I don’t have much experience in the DRPG genre. I played Etrian Odyssey 1-3, some Wizardry console ports, and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. But I think it’s pretty good so far despite the long wait.
