Air New Zealand Carry-on Baggage Allowance
Air New Zealand’s carry-on baggage policy applies to all flights operated by Air New Zealand. If your itinerary includes codeshare flights or flights operated by other airlines, you should check their baggage allowance as well.

Below are the size and weight requirements of Air New Zealand’s carry-on baggage policy:

Free carry-on baggage allowance
Economy Class passengers are allowed 1 standard carry-on bag + 1 small personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag.
Premium Economy, Business Premier, connecting Business Premier, and Airpoints Gold/Elite and Star Alliance Gold members are allowed 2 standard carry-on bags + 1 small personal item.
Carry-on size requirements
The combined linear dimensions (A + B + C in the illustration above) of your standard carry-on bag (incl. wheels and handles) must not exceed 118cm/46.5in. The small personal item (weight undisclosed) must fit under your front seat.
Note. If you’re travelling on Air New Zealand’s Q300 aircraft, the item marked C in the illustration above must (for your standard carry-on bag) not exceed 22cm/8.7in.

Carry-on weight requirements
For Economy Class passengers:
The standard carry-on bag must not exceed 15lb/7kg in weight.
The small personal item (size undisclosed) must be small enough to fit under your front seat.
For Premium Economy, Business Premier, connecting Business Premier, and Airpoints Gold/Elite and Star Alliance Gold members:
The combined weight of the carry-ons must not exceed 30lb/14kg, and one of the items can weigh up to 22lb/10kg.
If you’re travelling with more than your free carry-on baggage allowance and your ticket includes checked baggage, you have the option to:

Repack some of the items in your checked bag
Purchase an additional checked bag in advance
Purchase excess baggage at the airport
Note

Airpoints Gold and Elite members are entitled to carry 1 additional carry-on bag of up to 15lb/7kg in addition to their standard carry-on baggage allowance.

What is Air New Zealand’s checked baggage allowance?

Your checked baggage allowance on Air New Zealand will depend on your route, fare type, and membership tier status.

Any standard piece of checked baggage must not exceed 50lb/23kg in weight and 158cm/62in in combined linear dimensions. If it does, you will be charged excess baggage fees, regardless of your fare type, itinerary, and frequent flyer status.

Fast Bag privileges on direct regional domestic flights, which entitles you to collect your bags from the Fast Bag area after exiting your aircraft. Fast Bag can only be used if:
Your fare includes only 1 piece of checked bag, i.e., you’re travelling on a seat+bag, flexichange, or flexirefund ticket.
Your bag does not weigh more than 33lb/15kg and is not oversized.
Your flight does not include stopovers or connections.
Your bag does include restricted items, such as loose/spare batteries.
You will be entitled to the international baggage allowance throughout the journey if you’re travelling on a domestic flight as part of an international ticket,
Bags weighing more than 50lb/23kg and less than 70lb/32kg will be charged overweight baggage charges and bags exceeding 158cm/62in in combined linear dimensions (L + W + H) will be charged oversized baggage charges. Bags exceeding 70lb/32kg are not
allowed—they must either be repacked or sent as unaccompanied baggage.
Car seats/strollers can be carried free of cost with children.
Up to 2 wheelchairs/medical equipment can be carried free of charge (if using). If a single-ticket journey includes another airline, the most significant carrier’s (MSC’s) baggage allowance will apply, except in the following cases:
If your travel originates or ends in the U.S. or Canada, your baggage allowance and excess baggage charges for the full trip will be decided by the first marketing carrier.
If your travel starts in Brazil, the local regulations stipulate a free baggage allowance of 2 checked bags not exceeding 70lb/32kg per bag for the entire journey, irrespective of stopovers.
If you’re travelling with excess baggage, the cheapest option is to purchase a Prepaid Extra Bag in advance.

If you’re travelling with excess baggage, you can purchase it in advance and save money, as long as you do it at least 90 minutes before departure for international flights and 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights.

You can pre-pay for baggage in any of the following ways:

Online when purchasing your ticket or later via the Manage booking tab on the homepage.
Simply retrieve your existing flight booking with your booking reference number and add extra baggage by following the prompts.
By phone

What are Air New Zealand’s excess baggage fees?
If you’re travelling within your free baggage allowance, no extra baggage charges will apply. However, if you’re travelling with excess baggage, additional charges will apply (depending on your route and when/where you pay).

The excess baggage fees for extra, overweight, and oversized bags will depend on your country of departure and when/where you’re paying the baggage fees—in advance (known as prepaid baggage fees) or at the airport—as shown in the tables below.

The cost of adding a bag in advance on Air New Zealand will depend on your route. Paying for your baggage in advance can be more than 2x cheaper than paying at the airport, as shown below. Remember, if you’re purchasing baggage in advance, you must
purchase it at least 90 minutes before departure for international flights and at least 30 minutes before departure for domestic flights.

An Extra Baggage charge will apply for any extra bags you carry. You can book an extra bag in advance—online or by phone (phone bookings will incur a nominal service charge).

Airport Excess Baggage Fees
What are the excess baggage fees payable at the airport for extra, overweight, and oversized bags?

If you exceed your free baggage allowance, you will have to pay extra charges. Bags exceeding 158cm/62in and 50lb/23kg are subject to oversized and overweight baggage charges respectively. Excess baggage charges paid at the airport are in the currency of
the departure country.

If you want to check in a bag on a seat only fare, just upgrade your booking to a seat+bag fare (by phone or online if you purchased your ticket directly from Air New Zealand).
If you’re travelling with multiple passengers and purchase Prepaid Extra Bags, the extra baggage can be spread across all passengers (to save money), as long as you check in together.
You’re not allowed to purchase extra bags online for international multi-stop flights, or on an infant fare.
Charges for overweight and oversized bags and sporting equipment will depend on their weight and size.
Combined Extra Baggage Allowance. 2 or more passengers travelling on a single booking are entitled to a pooled/grouped Extra Bags allowance, as long as they check in together.
Refunds for Extra Bags will only be credited to the original form of payment at Air New Zealand’s sole discretion.
Oversized bags will be accepted if there’s room on your flight, subject to excess baggage charges. However, if any of your checked bag’s dimensions exceed 100cm (1m), contact Air New Zealand with the length, width, and height to check if your bag can
fit in the baggage area of the aircraft.
If your bag is too large to be loaded on your flight, make alternative arrangements by contacting Air New Zealand Cargo or a freight company in your area at least 5 days before your flight’s departure.
Smart Bags
Smart baggage items powered by lithium batteries and Wi-Fi technology can pose a risk to aircraft safety if they are not handled properly. You can check in such items only if:

The non-removable batteries in them contain up to 0.3g lithium or up to 2.7Wh lithium-ion.
You remove the removable batteries from them and carry them with you in the aircraft cabin.
Smart baggage items powered by lithium batteries can be brought as carry-on baggage if they comply with Air New Zealand’s carry-on baggage limitations by weight and size.

Bluesmart baggage items will not be accepted as carry-on baggage on Air New Zealand’s Regional (turbo-prop) aircraft due to storage limitations.

Air New Zealand Sports Baggage Policy
According to Air New Zealand’s baggage policy:

Sporting equipment measuring less than 200cm/78.7in in length and weighing up to 50lb/23kg will be treated as a standard bag.
Sporting equipment exceeding 200cm/78.7in in length and 50lb/23kg in weight will incur excess baggage charges.
The maximum permissible weight for sporting equipment is 70lb/32kg.
The maximum oversize length on Jet aircraft is 250cm/98.4in.
If you’re flying on Air New Zealand’s Regional Domestic services and your sporting equipment’s dimensions exceed 180cm/70.9in in length, 80cm/31.5in in width, and 120cm/47.2in in height, you must contact Air New Zealand for assistance, as sporting
items measuring up to 220cm/86.6in in length—such as skis and poles and fishing rods—may be accepted.
Sports bags can include more than a single piece of related equipment and are assessed on total weight and length. Below are a few examples of sporting equipment that can be packed as single items:

If you’re travelling with sporting equipment that exceeds the maximum weight or size, you must contact Air New Zealand Cargo or a local freight company at least 5 days before departure.

How to Pack Bikes

Aside from kid bikes without chains, bicycles must be packed properly in a bike bag/box, available at all domestic airports for NZD 25 (subject to availability). The dimensions of the bike box are 80cm in height, 144cm in length, and 31cim in width.

Although tires need not be deflated, packed bicycles will only be accepted as checked baggage if:

The handlebars are turned sideways or removed
The pedals are turned in or removed
The nitrogen gas pressure in mountain bike struts does not exceed 200kPa (kilopascal) or 29PSI (pounds per square inch)
Tire-inflating cartridges do not exceed 50ml and contain a non-flammable gas Packing Tips for Bikes

Air New Zealand Ski Baggage

Ski baggage not exceeding 200cm/78.7in in length long and 50lb/23kg in weight will be treated as one standard bag. Ski baggage weighing up to 70lb/32kg will incur excess baggage charges (more than 70lb/32kg is not permitted).

The maximum weight and length of ski baggage on jet aircraft (Boeing 787, 777, 767, 747, 737, and Airbus A320) are 70lb/32kg and 250cm/98.4in respectively.

On Regional Domestic flights, you must contact Air New Zealand if the dimensions of your ski baggage exceed 180cm/70.9in in length, 80cm/31.5in width, and 120cm/47.2in, because ski baggage items (skis and poles) measuring up to 220cm/86.6in in length may
be accepted.

Air New Zealand Musical Instruments Policy

What is Air New Zealand’s baggage policy for musical instruments?

Musical instruments not exceeding 100cm in length and 15lb/7kg in weight count as one standard bag. If they exceed these measurements, overweight or oversized charges will apply, along with applicable restrictions.

You’re allowed to carry larger musical instruments like cellos in the aircraft cabin if you purchase an extra seat for it. The aircraft crew will secure your musical instrument safely on the seat next to you.

To book a seat for your cello, call Air New Zealand at Onboard. The aircraft’s crew will secure your instrument safely for you. To book a seat for a cello, call the local Air New Zealand office/call center in your area, or your travel agent.

Prohibited Items on Air New Zealand Baggage
You’re not allowed to carry the following items on Air New Zealand:

More than 1 lighter/matchbox
Liquid oxygen systems
Disabling devices such as pepper spray, etc.
Electric shock weapons containing lithium batteries, compressed gas, or explosives
Aerosols which are not toiletry/medicinal items
Security equipment that includes lithium batteries, such as cash bags/boxes, attaché cases, and other dangerous goods/pyrotechnical material as part thereof
Mini-Segway, hoverboard, air wheel, solo wheel, balance wheel, lithium-operated skateboard, personal transportation devices for on-board storage, and similar lithium battery operated recreational vehicles
Spare/installed lithium batteries exceeding 160Wh/8g of lithium content
Durian fruit can neither be carried in carry-on nor checked baggage
Food and Drinks
Depending on the customs rules of the destination country, the following items are permitted:

No restrictions on alcoholic drinks with less than 24% alcohol by volume, as long as they are in less than 5L containers and their original retail packaging (per passenger).
Liquid foods, incl. milk, juice, water, soups, and jams, if securely sealed and packed.
Dry food, such as nuts, fruit, sandwiches, and biscuits.
Note: Alcoholic drinks containing more than 70% alcohol by volume are not allowed. You may have to pay customs duty on arrival, so do check your duty-free allowance with the local authorities before travelling.

Medical Devices

The following items are prohibited:

Loose/spare batteries for medical devices. However, if they are properly packed, you can bring them as part of your carry-on baggage.

1 medical/clinical mercury thermometer per passenger, as long as it is for personal use and is packed in a protective case

Hair curlers with hydrocarbon gas, as long as they have a safety cover over the heating element—limited to 1 per passenger (refills are not allowed).
Toiletry/medicinal items, such as aerosols and those with alcohol, subject to the limits below.
Aerosols for personal/sporting purposes, as long as they are non-toxic and non-flammable, and prevent the accidental release of contents with a cap, subject to the limits below.
Maximum Permissible Quantities. The combined net quantity of all toiletries, aerosols, and medicinal articles must not exceed 4.4lb/2kg/2L/2qt—and no single article’s net quantity should exceed 1lb/0.5kg/0.5L/1pt.

The following items require approval, so you must contact Air New Zealand before booking your ticket:

Security equipment—such as cash bags/boxes and attaché cases powered by lithium batteries, dangerous goods, and pyrotechnical material as part of the equipment
Sporting and Recreational Equipment
The following items are prohibited:

Installed lithium batteries exceeding 160Wh/8g lithium content, such as for electric bikes, underwater lamps, and Segways.
Fuel cell/internal combustion engines, even if fully drained.
The following items are allowed:

Battery-powered heat-producing items like underwater torches, as long as the batteries and heat-producing components are isolated from each other.
The following sporting and recreational equipment require approval, so you must contact Air New Zealand before booking your ticket:

Lithium battery-operated devices with 100-160Wh battery power or 2-8g lithium content.
Avalanche rescue backpack with compressed gas cartridges.
Camping stoves with fuel containers containing flammable liquid fuel.
Gas cartridges attached to self-inflating safety devices like life jackets/vests.
Mobility Devices, Battery-Powered Wheelchairs, and Gas-Powered Limbs
The following items are allowed:

Gas cylinders worn for operating mechanical limbs, as long as they are non-flammable and non-toxic, plus similar-sized spare cylinders for ensuring adequate supplies for the trip.
Battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility devices require approval, so you must contact Air New Zealand when booking your ticket.

Tools and Sharp Objects
Tools and Sharp Objects
The following items are prohibited on the aircraft:

Fuel cell/internal combustion engines, even with the fuel/liquids fully drained.
Loose/spare batteries (if packed properly, most types may be permitted as part of carry-on luggage.
The following items are allowed, subject to the conditions below:

Securely contained blades/sharp tools, like chisels, scraper blades, and screwdrivers, as part of checked baggage only.
Blunt instruments like hammers and bars, only as part of checked baggage. Heat-producing articles like diving lamps (underwater torches) and battery-operated soldering irons, as long as the battery and heat-producing components are isolated from each other.
Appliances that contain batteries, such as power tools, as long as the battery terminals are insulated with tape and the power switch is trigger-locked or taped in the off position. If your appliance contains non-removable batteries, the latter must be
properly secured to prevent accidental activation.
Permeation devices to calibrate air quality monitoring devices, only as part of checked baggage under specific conditions (call Air New Zealand for details).
The following equipment require approval, so you must contact Air New Zealand before booking your ticket:

Mercury-filled barometers/thermometers must be carried by a government/official/weather bureau representative.
Culturally and Religiously Significant Articles
The following articles are allowed:

Safely packed culturally/religiously significant articles like Patu, Mere, Tokotoko, Taiaha, Dirks, Kirpans, and Sgian Dubhs.
Flammable, Corrosive, Explosive, and Toxic Items
Most inflammable, corrosive, explosive, and toxic items are prohibited on the aircraft, such as:

Safety matches/matches
Cigarette lighters, lighter refills, and lighter fuel
Fireworks
Flammable liquids like petrol, solvents, varnish, paint, etc.
Bleaches, acids, and peroxides
Phosphorus
Insecticides, weed killers, and fertilizers
Flammable, Corrosive, Explosive, and Toxic Items
The following items are allowed:

Specimens (non-infectious) of birds, mammals, amphibians, fish, insects, reptiles, and other invertebrates packed, along with up to 30ml of flammable liquids such as liquid alcohol/alcohol solution, as long as they are heat-sealed plastic bags/vials that
are further packed in another absorbent plastic bag and heat-sealed. The combined quantity of flammable liquids must not be more than 1L.
Insulated packaging with refrigerated liquid nitrogen (dry shipper), as long as:
It is fully absorbed in a porous material and ready for transportation
It is at a low temperature
It contains safe products that do not fall under dangerous goods regulations. The insulated packaging’s design will not allow pressure buildup inside the container.
Will not allow the release of any refrigerated liquid nitrogen.
No more than 5.5lb/2.5kg of dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) for preserving perishables is allowed both as part of carry-on and checked baggage, provided it is:
Packed in a polystyrene box-like container that allows gas release.
A Dry Ice label is applied on the package, stating the net weight of the dry ice or that it contains less than 5.5lb/2.5kg of dry ice.
Firearms and Ammunition
Air New Zealand does not accept firearms and ammunition on the aircraft. However, you may be allowed to travel with them on domestic and international flights, subject to the conditions below:

You must hold a current firearms license or a valid import permit
You must be carrying one of the following types of firearms:
Sporting firearms
Imitation firearms
Decommissioned firearms
Air rifles, air pistols, or BB guns
Soft air pellet guns
You must ensure that your firearm is:
Unloaded and the magazines are empty
Packed in a hard case and locked
Rendered fully inoperable, i.e., you have removed the bolt, fitted the trigger guard and trigger locks, etc.
Not packed with any type of ammunition
Not packed with the bolt (if applicable)
Has been declared to a Customer Service Agent at check-in
You must ensure that your ammunition:
Is securely packed in a container with each round separated, i.e., not touching each other
Does not exceed 11lb/5kg (incl. the container’s weight)
Is packed in your checked baggage
Is not packed with your firearm in the same case
Has been declared to a Customer Service Agent at the check-in counter
You may need to purchase a Prepaid Extra Bag as your firearms case will count as one checked-in bag.
You’re allowed to carry the following types of ammunition:
Cartridges with an inert projectile
Cartridges, small arms, and blanks
Note. Unless contained in the ammunition, black powder, primers, and percussion caps are not allowed.

If you’re travelling with firearms or ammunition into or outside of New Zealand:
Check with New Zealand Police before travelling, as you may require special import/export permits.
Check the requirements of the destination and transit countries.
Carry all your documentation and permits.
If you’re switching to another airline carrier or a codeshare partner with an Air NZ flight number:
You must declare your firearm and ammunition to the new carrier.
Air New Zealand will not transfer any bag containing firearms/ammunition to another airline carrier.
You must clear customs, collect your baggage, and check it in with the new airline carrier.
Check the airline’s requirements for firearms and ammunition, as their rules may be stricter/different and non-compliance could entail severe penalties.
Delayed, Lost, and Damaged Baggage
Delayed Baggage

If your baggage didn’t arrive with you:

Immediately report the missing bag to the Baggage Service Office on arrival. You will be issued a mishandled baggage report containing your file reference number and baggage details.
Keep the mishandled baggage report that you receive from the Baggage Services Office.
For international flights that may include connecting domestic flights, call or email the Baggage Services Office at the arrival airport and provide your file reference number and name no later than 21 days of arrival.
For domestic flights within New Zealand, send an email to the Baggage Services Office no later than 30 days of your arrival, and provide your file reference number and name.
Check your baggage status via the online baggage tracing service. All you need to do is enter the file reference number that was provided to you when you filed your missing baggage report, and your name.
Keep all the receipts for replacement/emergency items.
Save your airline ticket, baggage receipts, and excess baggage coupons.
Air New Zealand will:

Contact you when the missing baggage is located, and deliver it to the address specified by you.
Send daily updates by SMS/email (if you choose).
Note. Make sure you’ve provided your correct contact details, incl. mobile phone number and/or email address. If your delivery address has changed, inform the concerned Baggage Services Office or make the changes via Air New Zealand’s online baggage
tracing service.

If you don’t receive your baggage within 24 hours and you’re not in your hometown, you may be eligible for emergency expenses. For more information, contact the concerned Baggage Services Office. If you have insured your baggage, contact your
insurance company for assistance.

How to apply for damaged baggage compensation

If your baggage lands in a damaged condition, you must report the damage by email to the nearest Baggage Services Office within 7 days. A staff member will assess your claim and either replace your bag (minus depreciation) or process your claim per rules.


Time limits. You must report in writing your delayed or damaged checked bag within these time limits:

Domestic flights without international connections
For damaged checked baggage, within 30 days of collecting your checked bag. For delayed checked bag, within 21 days from when your bag should have been made available to you.
International flights
For damaged checked baggage, within 7 days of collecting your checked bag(s). For delayed checked baggage, within 21 days from when your bag should have been made available to you.
Frequently Asked Questions on Air New Zealand Baggage Allowance
You’re allowed to carry up to 3 checked bags per passenger (incl. excess baggage) on Air New Zealand. The weight of a single checked bag must not exceed 50lb/23kg (per bag) and the size must not exceed 158cm/62in in combined linear dimensions.

Air New Zealand allows the following items for free as carry-on baggage:

1 standard carry-on bag plus 1 personal item for Economy Class passengers.
2 standard carry-on bags plus 1 personal item for Premium Economy Class, Business Premier Class, connecting Business Premier Class, Airpoints Gold/Elite, and Star Alliance Gold member
