Information about United baggage fees, baggage policy, and baggage allowance
United Airlines baggage policy, incl. for overweight/oversized baggage, is similar to that of most U.S. airlines. One thing to note is that Economy Class fares are split into 2 types: Basic Economy and Standard Economy, which is important to remember for
your carry-on allowance.
Below is a snapshot of United Airlines baggage policy, fees, and allowance:
United Airlines carry-on baggage allowance is as follows:
1 standard carry-on bag not exceeding 56 x 35 x 22cm (22 x 14 x 9inches)
1 personal item not exceeding 43 x 25 x 22cm (17 x 10 x 9inches)
Exception. Basic Economy passengers are allowed only 1 personal item of the same dimensions as above. If you bring a full carry-on bag, you will need to check it in and pay the applicable checked baggage fee plus a USD 25 gate handling fee unless you’
re a Premier member or hold a qualifying MileagePlus credit card. However, Basic Economy passengers travelling on transatlantic flights are allowed to carry 1 standard carry-on bag and 1 personal item of the same dimensions as above.
The carry-on baggage allowance for lap infants includes a diaper bag, government-approved child seat/car seat, and breast pump.
United Airlines checked baggage/check-in baggage policy is as follows:
Checked bags must not exceed 50lb/23kg per bag for Economy and Premium Economy Class fares and 70lb/32kg for Business and First Class fares.
All checked bags must adhere to a size limit of 158cm/62inches.
United recommends that you assess your baggage fees by using the airline’s free baggage calculator tool.
The oversized baggage fee typically ranges from USD 200 – 400, depending on your route.
Depending on your route, the overweight baggage fee ranges from USD 100 – 400 per 51 – 70lb bag, and USD 200 – 600 per 71 – 100lb bag.
You can pre-pay for baggage online or with the mobile app.
Purchasing baggage at the airport will cost you USD 5 more.
Premier members are allowed free extra baggage allowance depending on their membership status and route.

Carry-on Baggage Allowance Tips
Basic Economy passengers can carry only 1 personal item, except on transatlantic flights.
Basic Economy fare passengers who bring a full carry-on bag (except on transatlantic routes) must check it in at the gate and will be charged the applicable checked baggage fee plus a USD 25 gate handling fee. However, Premier members and qualifying
MileagePlus credit card holders are exempted from this—they are entitled to bring 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item even on a Basic Economy Class fare.
You will have to pay extra if your carry-on bag exceeds the permissible dimensions.
United Airlines Carry-on Baggage Fees
What are United Airlines baggage fees for carry on bags?
Aside from the USD 25 fee that Basic Economy passengers must pay for bringing a full-sized carry-on bag, United Airlines does not charge a carry-on fee for any ticket. However, if your carry-on bag is bigger than the maximum size permitted, your bag will
be checked to your final destination but you will be charged the applicable checked baggage fee.

However, if you’re flying within North America on an Economy Class fare and you purchase your checked baggage online more than 24 hours prior to departure, you will typically pay USD 30 and USD 40 for your first and second bag respectively. But if you
pay at the airport, the fee goes up by USD 5, which means you will have to pay USD 35 and USD 45 for the first and second bags. If you’re travelling between USA and Mexico, the second bag will cost you USD 55.

Per United Airlines baggage policy for Basic Economy fares, your carry-on baggage allowance is the same as that for standard Economy fares if you’re flying on a trans-Pacific flight to/from the U.S., or on a transatlantic flight (any flight to Africa,
the Middle East, and Europe) to/from the U.S., Central America, and Mexico, as well as to/from Panama, El Salvador, and South America, as long as it is operated by United Airlines or United Express.
On remaining routes, Basic Economy fares allow you to bring only 1 personal item as carry-on baggage, as long as it fits under your front seat. The personal item can be a purse, laptop bag, shoulder bag, or a similar item that does not exceed 22 x 25 x

titled United Airlines Carry-on Baggage Policy.
