• ArcaOS ...

From Marten Feldtmann@21:1/5 to All on Tue May 23 02:28:11 2017
I've been an OS/2 fan since the OS/2 2.0 came out and actually I bought a new personal license of ArcaOS (to support this attempt)... but the reality is pretty hard:

Where is OpenOffice ? Its not installed and its not on the DVD installation medium. No information, where to download the program from ...

Firefox 38.x and Thunderbird are delivered with OS, even my HTML5 application seem to run under Firefox 38.x (thats a good sign)

I managed to run the software in a VirtualBox under Linux - but the sound driver (SoundBlaster) did not work ... ok not that important, network is working, but I was NOT able to see any other computer on my network ... therefore mount a remote drive
    seems to be impossible.

I tried out a Samsung NC10 laptop - on such a small laptop OS/2 would be fast and yes it is fast - but has no network (neither WLAN or ethernet). So I removed the installation

I tried out a ThinkPad T61p, but the installer fails due to a corrupt partition table on the harddisc and no chance to "delete" the partition (I was not allowed to do that ...)

I tried a new desktop system (8 core system with AMD CPU 83xx and GTX1080 graphics card). Here the installation fails - during the installation process he looses its SATA DVD-ROM drive.

Tried the installation again with an USB drive, but got the same error as with the T61p - corrupted partition table (on a new, empty SSD drive !) and no way to create a new volume).

So to summarize for me: tried it on 3 hardware devices and never got a running system.

    reason).

I can see remote machines and can connect to them (it's just a matter of sorting out the usual settings and incompatibilities between various OS's). OS/2 to XP works as does OS/2 to Linux. You can forget OS/2 to Win 7 or
    later.
I don't know what the state is of Samba on ArcaOS though. I know there
was work going on with it.

Is it supposed to be included with the OS? - If so we have all been

    I had a semi-successful install to a Dell Latitude E5500 laptop: The
install (Custom with lots deselected) went fairly well and the system
works but the "semi" bit is that there was no Intel (Dell) 5100 wireless
driver and cups printing does not work.

As this laptop had previously had another OS/2 variant, eComStation,
installed I already knew that I needed to have the nic driver to hand to
add in after the install. Now working.

As for cups not working the answer is to uninstall cups, ghostscript and gutenprint - using the ANPM (Arca Noae Package Manager front end for
yum/rpm, found in Install/Remove folder) - and then install the
    "non-rpm" cups/ghostscript/gutenprint files from http://trac.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/CupsPort

Could be worth posting your install problems at os2world.com - good
chance that there are answers to the various install problems
encountered on the range of hardware you tried.

I ordered my copy Saturday, hoping all will go well on my new-to-me

Well - at last a working OS/2 computer.

I wiped out the SSD totally and then did an install on a 8-core AMD based computer on an Asus motherboard:

    - AMD 83xx core CPU
    - sound driver working
    - network driver working
    - panaroma screen drivers running at 4k under 1080GTX

Then OS/2 is running pretty nice.

Then I installed IBM VisualAge for Smalltalk under OS/2 and it worked as good as in the year around 2000.

Yes, the installation went much better than my eComStation 21. I, too,
really need them to support wireless quickly! I have all Thinkpads and
IBM boxes. The Thinkpads, 2T400's and one T430, all have the Intel

I have an Intel (Dell) 5100, device IDs 8086:4232, working fine in my
Dell E5500 laptop with ArcaOS - but it was a PITA getting it to work. I
made some notes a little later in case a reinstall is necessary in the
    future.

ArcaOS5.0 - resolving missing wireless nic support for Intel (Dell) 5100
    a/g/n 8086:4232

    Things to check for problems:
    \ibmcom\lantran.log
    \ibmcom\protocol.ini
and also check the genmac log

Due to the problems I bumped into trying to get the Intel 5100 working I
ended up reinstalling ArcaOS several times. These are the steps I needed
to take to get an Intel (Dell) 5100 wireless nic working - hopefully I
    have not missed anything out.

1] During ArcaOS Reinstall select a genmac wireless nic to install.
Reason: All required supporting software gets installed at this point -
it is far more difficult to get xwlan, dhclient etc working by
    installing later.

2] When the ArcaOS install has finished you need to use Warpin (Install/Uninstall folder) to remove genmac - do not worry about the
    driver, leave that alone.

3] Install genmac from the GENMAC2.WPI package - not sure if this is
available online so do not have a download link. I lifted this version
    from the eComStation2.2beta2 DVD (\CID\SERVER\ECSPKG\GENMAC2.WPI).

4] Install the w8086x4232 driver from GENMU_TEST-0-2-7.WPI then check
that the w8086x4232.nif file is correct - the w8086:4232.nif file I used
had some mistakes showing as 4332 instead of 4232 in several places
which would prevent the driver loading. I seem to recall editing the genmac\nif\w8086x4232.nif then copying the file to \ibmcom\macs
    overwriting the existing 8086x4232.nif file.

5] Use Adapters and Protocols (System Setup -> Network folder) to
*Change* the nic to the correct nic - also check you have required
    Protocol(s) in place.

6] Reboot - check for driver loading OK, should be a message like "...
    loaded for [8086:4232]"

With luck all should now work and you should now be able to use the
wireless client software installed by ArcaOS - as long as you selected a wireless nic to start with.

    Thanks Pete,
This kind of problem should be resolved simply without going through this
type of hassle! I am reminded about how difficult it was to get
networking in OS/2 Warp Connect without an Etherlink card! Hopefully,
ArcaOS will take care of this automatically with an upgrade.

sure, but then GenMAC is not the solution!

Since many years, it is not developed anymore and the 5100 is an
unsupported device, good luck when you got this particular
device-/vendor-id up and running, but mostly it will not work.

Unfortunately the successor MultiMAC does not support any Wifi right now.

Just to be different, ArcaOS installs easily on my T61, but I get a
random hang at the startup folder. It seems to depend partly on what is

I have had that problem, for years. If there are more than about 4

Thanks, that seems to work fine. I am now in the same position as other people where wifi used to work with ECS 2.2 but does not now.

It is correctly identified as Intel 3945 a/b/g. Nothing happens when I
try to enable radio from the properties menu (and some of the menu items
that were available under ECS are showing grayed out). Then when I try
to go back into the menu, the whole apps bar closes and disappears. I
don't know what adjustments might be feasible. For instance, if I change
the NIF file, the boot process complains about no suitable hardware.

There are circumstances where xwlan widget crashes and doing so takes the whole xcenter

The 3945 is one that does operate near the limit, and the symptoms
sound like the driver overlay problem. I am not sure what can be done
about that, other than to edit the INI, or registry, file to reduce
memory usage (fewer buffers, and the like). I am away from home, and i

You may want to check that the Intel 3945 driver used by ArcaOS is the
same driver that you previously had working in eCS.

If it is not you want to change the ArcaOS driver for the previous driver.

I also found it useful to change the genmac package. People post there
is no difference between genmac220 and genmac221 but the 221 version
(eCS2.2) works for me and the 220 version (ArcaOS) did not - possibly

And having corrected an error in the security key, I now have wifi

What will work with the Intel 5100 wifi cards? I have two Thinkpads, a

sure, but then GenMAC is not the solution!

Since many years, it is not developed anymore and the 5100 is an
unsupported device, good luck when you got this particular
device-/vendor-id up and running, but mostly it will not work.

Unfortunately the successor MultiMAC does not support any Wifi right now.

I would think that ArcaOS would support IBM/Thinkpad/Intel cards right OOB!

may be, they should do so, but right now, the latest Intel Wifi
supported by OS/2 is the 3945ABG (at least some models by unsupported
    GenMAC).

They work perfectly under Centos 6.8.
OS/2 (or eCS or ArcaOS) probably never will run as good as any Linux on
such "modern" systems, so stay with Linux.

If you really want a mostly OS/2-campatible notebook, you have to use a ThinkPad T42 or T60, most T43 and T61 also will work, same for the X-series.

Nevertheless most applications are outdated, the ports are not that
stable and/or functional than the ones on Linux ...

I certainly hope that Arca release wifi drivers in the near future -
should make it easier to get things working rather than fiddling around
    with genmac.

I did post my simple "howto" getting the Intel 5100 working earlier in

I did post my simple "howto" getting the Intel 5100 working earlier in
    this thread...

If you need the driver pack I used send me an email.

If you would be so kind to send me the driver pack, I would appreciate it.

I certainly hope that Arca release wifi drivers in the near future -

Did you try these drivers yet?

Has anyone succeeded in getting the Samba server that comes with ArcaOS to work? I have tried everything I can think of
on two different systems without success. The client works fine. In fact, it successfully connects to Windows 10, a
first. I imagine it will also work with Windows 7 or 8 but I have no means of testing this.

The server will not run. The smbd.exe demon starts and runs ok. The nmbd.exe demon starts and exits after a few seconds.
    Almost but no cigar.

Here are the messages I get when I try to start the server from a command window:

Add a line "workgroup = WORKGROUP" (w/o the quotes, if it's that) on
top of your "globals" section of smb.conf. And repeat when you ever
dared to call the configuration center again...
Did the trick here, works fine to W10, eCS, Linux (and client back),
    fix IP's.here.

    Good luck

Found the problem. It has been 2-1/2 years since I have done an install and I seem to have forgotten some of the
details. NETBIOS over TCPIP is only needed for IBM peer networking and is a nono with Samba. I have now successfully
installed ArcaOS on my desktop ASUS Z97-K motherboard and on my T60 widescreen laptop. Samba works and can connect to
    Windows 10.

So to summarize for me: tried it on 3 hardware devices and never got a running system.

Just to be different, ArcaOS installs easily on my T61, but I get a
random hang at the startup folder. It seems to depend partly on what is
    in the folder.

I have had that problem, for years. If there are more than about 4
items in the startup foldder, and they all try to start at the same
time that all of the RUN commands in CONFIG.SYS, and the STARTUP.CMD,
try to start, something will go wrong. he best answer, that I have
found is to iuse REXX AutoStart to space out the contents of the
    STARTUP folder:

you can also use the ArcaOS startup folder (which is based on the
Xworkplace startup folder). this starts all the items in the folder
separately after config.sys finishes. I found it (or rather, the
Xworkplace version) solved all my startup problems.
