OS/2 Is Dead: Long Live OS/2
Anthony Caruana
Back in the '90s, when I started working in the IT biz, Microsoft was
still fighting for total supremacy of the server operating systems
market. One of the challengers was IBM’s OS/2. There’s some history
behind Microsoft and IBM’s battle for the desktop and server operating
systems market but OS/2 faded away - or so I thought.
Blue Lion is an all new, 21st century version of OS/2 being developed by
Arca Noae.
It’s based on IBM’s last release of OS/2 Warp 4, MCP2 and will be able to
run OS/2, Windows 3.1, and DOS applications as well as ported Linux applications. It will have a significantly updated driver stack so it can
run on current hardware.
The feature list suggests it will be a potential platform for small
offices with support for productivity apps and some server functions.
The release is expected soon - the website says this quarter.
