    I don't know but I can tell you for a fact that my wife, who ignores all
    of the updates and only does them when they're forced on her, has had
    much fewer problems with her computer than I have as a result.

    Under Windows Update are 4 sections containing a wide variety of
    confusing settings.

    Probably some combination of them will disable updates permanently.

    I don't blame any OS maker for making some updates mandatory.
