    Today, my fantastic, inimitable Gentoo system automagically downloaded, configured, compiled, and installed, according to my exact specifications,

    Gimp was also listed to be updated but the increment was only
    a revision change (r1) and so I rejected it.

    Notice how my build cuts out a lot of crap which I don't want.
    This does NOT happen with distro packages. There, one gets the
    whole enchilada whether one wants it or not.

    That's Gentoo power!

    How long did this take? Don't know. My Home Depot delivery arrived
    and by the time I cut up the cardboard box, followed by a quick piss
    and a cup of hot cocoa, the update was complete.

    Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

    Now cue the Gentoo naysayers who will spew forth their jealous rants
    about the supposed "waste" of it all.

    But the naysayers are full to the brim with total bullshit.

    They all secretly wish that they too could use Gentoo. But they
    can't.

    Sorry chumps. Gentoo is only for superior GNU/Linux users.

    I'm a linux 'appliance' user not a techie/coder, but Gentoo has long been my
    go to distro. The amazing gentoo community is a big part of the reason:
    there is no linux community that is more helpful. Also, the documentation is
    as good as it gets; just reading the 'Manual' is a graduate course in linux. Gentoo is not that hard if you don't rush, follow the instructions exactly,
    and don't panic if something goes wrong - 9 times out of 10 someone on
    #gentoo or the email reflector has a solution.

    I'm fairly sure I could use Gentoo, I'm also certain it would not be
    anywhere near as cool as what I already have. My computer is Win12-
    ready, it's not that I lack resources for the software, it's that I
    just want Linux's advantages, Mint gives me that just as much as
    Gentoo would, without the weirdness.


    I sympathize with you. I also have Ubuntu and Arch in separate partiitions, which I boot into occassionally. There's something to be said for having everything 'just work' ootb.

    But there is the sense of satisfaction that comes with making your own
    kernels and configuring your system yourself.

    It's more than just "satisfaction" -- much more.

    Gentoo is a continuous learning experience. Building, configuring,
    and installing software and the kernel allows the user to completely
    understand his system. There are no "black boxes." The user comes
    to know how and why everything works.

    To give just one but highly important example, using Gentoo (and LFS)
    is how I know that, for a desktop workstation, systemd is totally
    unnecessary and is also a threat to software freedom.

    I personally fall somewhere in the middle, leaning towards system config.
