• Would like to re-assign left widows key as left alt key

My laptop's alt key doesnt work anymore.
I would like to set the left Windows key as the left Alt key, i.e. have the windows key transmit the left Alt key sequence.
I tried using xmodmap but getting a lot of errors.

    1) Tried the following and upon loading with xmodmap, gives me errors.
I think the left Windows key is Mod4

    clear Alt
    clear Mod4
    add Mod4 = Alt_L Alt_R

    error:
xmodmap: /home/sunil/.Xmodmap:1: bad clear modifier input line

    2) Even the following examples i was trying to test with give errors:
xmodmap −e "keysym BackSpace = Delete"
xmodmap: unable to open file '−e' for reading

    3) xev : not sure if xev can capture the windows key scan codes!!!

    4) showkey also errors out. Probably because of gnome ? and that this is not an xterm ? rather its a gnome terminal ??

    showkey --keycodes
Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console

Can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong ? and how to do this correctly??

    tia,

    Sunil

Truth welcomes investigation because truth knows investigation will lead
to converts. It is deception that uses all the other techniques.
