• Case makes it hard to turn phone on.

From micky@21:1/5 to All on Sun Feb 25 19:02:08 2024
So, my 85-yo friend's phone is just about completely set up, but i
noticed how hard it is to push the on/off button with the case on, but
    not with the case off.

But she has dropped it so I don't think it's good to be without a case.

She too acknowledged that it's hard to turn on etc. So I want to buy a
    new one.

In shopping for a new case, are there buzz words that mean the buttons
are still easy to push? This whole phone is not very old so I don't
think the problem is that the case is old and stiff. All the cases make
it harder to push IME, but do any have a way of saying they don't make
    it much harder? Keywords?

I don't have to ever push the on/off (sleep) button on my phone. I have it
set for 2 taps on the screen turn it on or off. Or it can be set for a
fingerprint on the screen to turn it on. (Same with this tablet BTW.) Check
the settings on her phone and maybe it has a similiar feature...

I don't have to ever push the on/off (sleep) button on my phone.

I do, very often. The power on button is also the "home" button, and the fingerprint sensor.

This depends on the particular phone.

Of course Carlos (duh?). That's why I suggested (in the part you snipped)
that micky check the settings to see if his phone might have a similar
    feature as mine.

And micky, another thing you you might try if you get a cheap case. Using a
pair of scissors you could cut the around the power button to make more
finger room without hurting the drop protection. I've done that with some
of mine to make more room around the headphone hole and USB-C jack...

I wonder if I would have thought if this if it were my own phone and not

The on/off-button is only there to start the phone after buying it. Then
never ever turn it off again. It is so difficult to teach this wisdom to
senior people. A smartphone is not a dumb coffee maker or toaster.

In my case, I certainly can set up as you say, but that doesn't help me
at all: the fingerprint sensor is in the power up button. And the power
up button doubles as the home button. Two functions that I actually need
a lot and can not be replaced by tapping on the screen. So, if the case
makes hard to press the power button, there are two solution:

    * push harder
    * replace the folder.
    * cut a hole.

In my case, the case allows easy access to the power button.

was working on it for her and thus in control of it I referred to it as
his phone. (The quote is above.)

Quote: "I don't have to ever push the on/off (sleep) button on my phone.
I have it set for 2 taps on the screen turn it on or off. Or it can be
set for a fingerprint on the screen to turn it on. (Same with this
tablet BTW.) Check the settings on her phone and maybe it has a similiar feature..."

That's about your phone, not his.

Actually that paragraph IS about mickys phone. I'm suggesting Micky
make his phone work like mine by tapping the screen to wake so he won't
have to push his difficult to use on/off (sleep) button which would
    have solved his problem.

    Not reading the rest.

Don't blame you. But before you slink away let me refresh your memory
with a few quotes from your last post:

    1:
Carlos: You can not make the broad generalization that the power up
    button is useless

Me: I never said that either.

Prove me wrong with a quote. Bet you can't.

    Carlos response: Snip.

    2:
Carlos: and that a case that impedes using it is just fine.

Me: I never said that either. I even suggested he modify the case to
    remove the impediment.

Prove me wrong with a quote. Course you can't.

    Carlos response: Snip.

And just one more bet for you Carlos. I'll Bet you DID read the rest
before you decided to do your snip job... ;)

You have to try them at the shop.

I don't have to ever push the on/off (sleep) button on my phone.

I do, very often. The power on button is also the "home" button, and
    the fingerprint sensor.

This depends on the particular phone.

Of course Carlos (duh?). That's why I suggested (in the part you snipped) >>> that micky check the settings to see if his phone might have a similar
    feature as mine.

In my case, I certainly can set up as you say, but that doesn't help me
    at all:

My suggestions are about fixing micky's phone, not yours. You need help too?

the fingerprint sensor is in the power up button. And the power
up button doubles as the home button. Two functions that I actually need
a lot and can not be replaced by tapping on the screen.

So how does this help micky?

I found it interesting. If only that it points out things to look for
or avoid in the next phone.

    So, if the case
makes hard to press the power button,

    there are two solution:

I count 3 of your solutions:

    * push harder

She actually has good finger nails, that she uses. Mine don't stick out
so I have to use the skin part.

    * replace the folder.

    * cut a hole.

Gosh Carlos, I worked hard on that paragraph below about cutting a hole. At
least you could have read it. I assume that is the case since you make the same suggestion anew.

In my case, the case allows easy access to the power button.

Lucky you. Hear that micky. Think he's trying to make you feel bad... :-/

Just listening to the news had already made me feel bad.

Actually, I can tap or press the power button in my phone, attached to
the case, just fine, because the case has been designed properly.

Your problem is simply that you have to test the case on the shop. Find
out the brand of the case that doesn't work properly, and don't buy that
    one again.

BTW, for whoever said the on/off button is not needed:. It's not just
turning the screen on, or off. There is turning off the phone entirely.
The idea of leaving it on all the time is inapproproiate for her because
she already runs the battery down to 30% sometimes and if the phone were
on another 16 hours that she's not even using it, it would be in the
area which lowers the recharging ability.

And I can go 4 days without using the phone. I'm not going to leave it
    running all day and night.

Since I found mail-order WITH lots of pictures, I don't like going to
the shop anymore. Plus I have to go to her house to get the phone, then
to a store, and she doesn't live near any such stores, then back to her
    house.

    Find
out the brand of the case that doesn't work properly, and don't buy that

I looked, found some little symbol maybe, but can't determine the brand.
I'm going over with a knife and a piece of wood for carving and just cut
    out that section.

    Model, Brand?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says "specific" means: 1. Relating to a particular thing. In this thread we are all talking about a particular
phone. Not yours, not mine, but micky's friend's phone. No model or
brand is needed for it to be the 'specific thing' we are all talking
    about in this discussion.

    Ignoring the rest.

More snipping to hide the evidence that was snipped? That's OK. I'm
getting used to it... ;) ;)

In shopping for a new case, are there buzz words that mean the buttons
are still easy to push? This whole phone is not very old so I don't
think the problem is that the case is old and stiff. All the cases make
it harder to push IME, but do any have a way of saying they don't make
    it much harder? Keywords?

To follow up, she turned me down when I offered to trim away the part of
the csse that covers the 3 buttons. Maybe I didn't describe well what I planned.

And today, Sunday, she got another call from the place where her brother
is living. She couldn't understand the whole message and when she
called back the number that was given, she still went through the
operator, at a cost of $1.50, and no one answered. That is typical.

When she called later, the operator told her they won't place personal
phone calls. Even though they have several times. Since she uses
Lingo, would this be the lingo.com operator? Do they count how many operator-placed calls each user has made?

And through all of this she didn't try to use 2ndLine that I had
installed it on her cell phone (which only has wifi). Even though I
had shown her how to use it. She says she's not smart enough to use it,
even though she can play videos on the phone with aiui little or no
    trouble.

I was out for several hours today. I'm not always home, of course,
which I why I'd told her she needs to be able to make the calls herself.

She is afraid her brother has been acting up again. That's why he was transferred out of Baltimore. On another occasion, they discharged him
from a hospital after an accident and sent him to her house. Eventually
he knocked her head on the basement floor and then on the wall, but
later didnt' remember anything. She thinks he was trying to kill her, or
at doing it what it takes to kill her. She had to call the police.
She's worried they will want to expel him from where he is now and have
her take him back. He had brain damage as a child, from a fall, but I
think he functioned fairly well for 20 or 30 years or maybe more. Now
    he's 77 and she's 85
