What's a good 9 inch or 10 inch tablet for a birthday gift?

I'm thinking the minimum should be 64GB Wi-Fi with an sdcard slot.
Nothing else seems to be critical.

The user has an old iPad mini which is falling apart.

She mainly uses it for Netflix and YouTube so the OS doesn't matter,
especially as her phone is a high-end Galaxy & her PC a ThinkPad.

She's not technical but she's comfortable punching buttons on any.

I asked for a screenshot of the iPad general page and it showed that it is Software Version 12.5.7, IPad mini 2, Model MF575LL/A.

The screenshot didn't show the capacity so I asked and she said it was 64GB with about 14GB available. She didn't know what was taking up that space.

All I want is to replace it, with the most cost effective tablet of a
similar size (she says she doesn't take pictures anymore with it).

Costco has three sections for tablets to choose from.
    Samsung https://www.costco.com/samsung-galaxy-tablets.html
    Apple https://www.costco.com/ipad.html
    Accessories https://www.costco.com/tablet-computers-accessories.html

What would you suggest as a good replacement tablet with bang for the buck?

Any of those will be fine for the intended use. Pick your price range and
go for it. Since she already has a Samsung phone, one of the Samsung
    tablets is an easy choice.

Another option is the Fire range of tablets from Amazon. No Google Play
Store out of the box, but Netflix and Youtube apps are available. The YT
app is by Amazon not by Google, but I'm not sure that matters?

I wouldn't get one if you want to do much beyond media consumption, but they should cover those options acceptably. The $70 Fires are cheaply made, but some of the slightly more expensive ones are better (I think the most
    expensive is $250 or thereabouts).

Otherwise, look at the base iPad (either the current or previous
generations, the current one had a significant price bump over the previous one)

I notice that Costco are selling the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - but only the
128GB model. From what you wrote it doesn't look like she needs more than
    64 GB. (I have one.)

But you may not get it cheaper if it's less popular. And there's a 2020
and a 2022 version, so Costco might be selling the older one, though I
don't know what the difference is.

It has an sdcard slot too, which other well-known makes don't.

If she already has an iPad then she's probably used to it and wouldn't
have to learn something new. Costco has a liberal return policy so you
can buy both and see which she prefers then return the other.

That Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is where I'll start comparisons then... https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_s6_lite-10158.php

You are correct that she doesn't need more than 64GB, where currently
that's plenty enough for her as she doesn't save much (she doesn't even
know what's on there). She used to use it for pictures, but not now.

Mostly it stays next to her in bed, always plugged in (even when in use)
due to the battery, where it's her "handheld TV screen" so to speak.

That means Wi-Fi is the most critical aspect, where I'm just trying to
match the tablet-size specifications as close as it is possible. https://www.gsmarena.com/apple_ipad_mini_2-5735.php

    Type = IPS LCD
    Size = 7.9 inches, 193.3 cm2 (~71.7% screen-to-body ratio)
    Resolution = 1536 x 2048 pixels, 4:3 ratio (~324 ppi density)

That Costco Galaxy Tab S6 Lite doesn't have a price listed though. https://www.costco.com/samsung-galaxy-10.4%22-tab-s6-lite-64gb---oxford-gray---includes-book-cover---sm-p613nzabxar.product.100660228.html

    Samsung Galaxy 10.4" Tab S6 Lite 64GB - Oxford Gray - Includes Book Cover SM-P613NZABXAR Item 1451576 Model SM-P610NZABXAR

    Features:
    Book Cover Included
    S Pen Included
    10.4" LCD Display
    Dolby Atmos Surround Sound
    8MP Rear, 5MP Front Camera

Does anyone have a Costco login who can tell us the price for it?
Then we can compare it with a similarly priced iPad for starters.

She is operating system agnostic, as for this tablet, it's only a portable
TV screen (so to speak), plus she already has all three platforms anyway.

I agree anything is an upgrade over a tablet so old it has to be kept on
the USB charger 24/7 (and which has a cracked screen, recently cracked).

But to replace it with "just anything" wouldn't need asking on this group.

The purpose is to get her a replacement where cost matters as does utility. She's going to use this gift tablet for about the next ten years.

The goal is to find 1 tablet in each ecosystem that fits the requirements.
The requirements aren't all that strict so we should be able to do that.

AFAICT, it only needs to be a "mini'ish" size with at least 64GB & Wi-Fi.

The question is what's the best bang for the buck today in EACH platform?
    iOS = ?
    Android = ?

I will add that to the list so that there are only three to choose from.

Not knowing anything about the "Fire range of tablets from Amazon", I
googled and found this - which seems to say there are three types. https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire-tablets/ft-device-specifications.html Fire HD =
    Fire =
    Fire HDX =

And each has a "year" listed in the model number listed as a "generation."
    2021 11th Gen
    2020 10th Gen
    2019 9th Gen
    2018 8th Gen
    2017 7th Gen
    2016 6th Gen
    2015 5th Gen
    2014 4th Gen
    2013 3nd Gen
    2012 2nd Gen
    2011 1st Gen

It seems each has three different sizes, 7", 8" and 10" so that's easy.
If it were for me, I'd make it ten inches but she's comfortable with 8.

I wouldn't get one if you want to do much beyond media consumption, but they should cover those options acceptably. The $70 Fires are cheaply made, but some of the slightly more expensive ones are better (I think the most expensive is $250 or thereabouts).

I didn't see the Amazon Fire tablets being sold at Costco, but I found them
on Amazon of course (where else would you find Amazon's own tablets).

Having never looked at them, how is this as decent "mini'ish" 8" Amazon
Fire tablet replacement for her old iPad Mini 2 with 64GB & Wi-Fi?

Amazon Fire HD 8 with 64GB 2GB RAM (2022 release) without lockscreen ads
    $145 https://www.amazon.com/All-new-Fire-HD-8-tablet/dp/B09BG56K7R

It cost an extra $15 when I pressed the "without lockscreen ads" option.
The extra 32GB of memory added $30, so storage is about $1/GB nowadays.

Otherwise, look at the base iPad (either the current or previous
generations, the current one had a significant price bump over the previous one)

Do you have a suggestion as to which iPad has the most bang for the buck?

So far what has been suggested are these two (based on what people added). Android = Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 64GB 4GB RAM, 10.4", SM-P610NZABXAR
    Amazon = Fire HD 8, 64GB. 2GB RAM, 2022, without lockscreen ads

Fire tablets are easily modified by side-loading to run apps from the Play
Store (Google for instructions). After I did mine they were just like any
of my other Android tablets. The current version of Android that the Fire
OS uses is a few numbers behind but that never caused me any problems.

You are way overthinking this. Any of these tablets are going to be fine.
All will have great “bang for buck”.

What is your price range? The 64GB iPad Mini 2 was $600 in 2013. $600
today buys a very nice tablet, which will be overpowered and overpriced to
be basically used as a TV.

A $350 Samsung tablet or a $350 iPad will be fine. Both also have larger screens than the iPad mini 2 she currently has. The only model with a
similar size to what she has now is the $500 iPad Mini 6.

Does she like the size of the iPad mini? Does she want something bigger?
How much do you want to spend?

All of these are more important factors than “Android vs iOS”.

So far what has been suggested are these two (based on what people added). >Android = Galaxy Tab S6 Lite 64GB 4GB RAM, 10.4", SM-P610NZABXAR
    Amazon = Fire HD 8, 64GB. 2GB RAM, 2022, without lockscreen ads

    What's a good bang-for-the-buck iPad that's similar to those 2 suggestions?

Can't go wrong with a base iPad. The 9th gen model is plenty powerful and
with the recent price reduction is good value.

Obviously, since she's very comfortable with the iPad, that's first choice. Do you have a suggestion as to which iPad has the most bang for the buck?

The 9th gen iPad is a specific model: https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/

I use mine for work daily and it's flawless. Also streams Netflix very
well. For a home user I'm not sure they need anything else. At $329 it's a
    bit of a steal.

Thanks for the input. For basic Web browsing or viewing videos on the BBC iPlayer I find the basic model adequate, but I do have an iPad with I would normally use. Perhaps for anything more than basic use the extra memory may well be worth it.

I bought the version without Ads, and there are times when access to mobile data might be useful. Whether the Fire range offers this I am unsure.

Ask her what she would like to have. This is not a $1-gift.

But NOT a Lenovo. I really liked mine until the power switch stopped
working properly. I can fix it temporarily, but it always fails again.
Aside from that I really liked it -- especially the price. But a power

I asked for a screenshot of the iPad general page and it showed that it
is Software Version 12.5.7, IPad mini 2, Model MF575LL/A.

The screenshot didn't show the capacity so I asked and she said it was
64GB with about 14GB available. She didn't know what was taking up that
    space.

All I want is to replace it, with the most cost effective tablet of a
similar size (she says she doesn't take pictures anymore with it).

Costco has three sections for tablets to choose from.
    Samsung https://www.costco.com/samsung-galaxy-tablets.html Apple
    https://www.costco.com/ipad.html Accessories
    https://www.costco.com/tablet-computers-accessories.html

What would you suggest as a good replacement tablet with bang for the
    buck?

I notice that Costco are selling the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - but only the
128GB model. From what you wrote it doesn't look like she needs more than
    64 GB. (I have one.)

But you may not get it cheaper if it's less popular. And there's a 2020
and a 2022 version, so Costco might be selling the older one, though I
don't know what the difference is.

It has an sdcard slot too, which other well-known makes don't.

Jesus, those prices are ridiculous -- especially if she isn't exactly
what used to be known as a power user.

Look for 10" tablets on Amazon. Just as easy to return.

    Type = IPS LCD
    Size = 7.9 inches, 193.3 cm2 (~71.7% screen-to-body ratio)
    Resolution = 1536 x 2048 pixels, 4:3 ratio (~324 ppi density)

That Costco Galaxy Tab S6 Lite doesn't have a price listed though. https://www.costco.com/samsung-galaxy-10.4%22-tab-s6-lite-64gb---oxford-gray---includes-book-cover---sm-p613nzabxar.product.100660228.html

    $250 + tax + $8 shipping

She is operating system agnostic, as for this tablet, it's only a portable
TV screen (so to speak), plus she already has all three platforms anyway.

Then _weight_ should be a major criterion. My Samsung GT S6 Lite is
lighter than any of my previous tablets - but that's probably true of any
    new device.

You don't need a $250 tablet just to watch Netflix IMO. If a Fire does

Thank you for logging into Costco to find the price for the suggested
Samsung Galaxy 10.4-inch Tab S6 Lite with 64GB 4GB RAM and for letting me
know it's out of stock (but she can probably find it on Amazon anyway).

To be fair to the other three suggestions, I should bring them all up or
down to the same size, where I don't want to provide her daughter with too
    much detail.

Bob Campbell said there is only one 8 inch iPad (for over $500) and Chris suggested the ten-inch size $329 https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/ and at
the same time David Taylor said the video is better on the 10-inch Fire.

So I'll limit all three (Fire, Android & Apple) to the larger 10 inch size.
I haven't checked prices or availability yet but does that seem to be fair?

    1. An Amazon Fire 2022 10 inches, 64GB/2GB, with no ads for about $150

True. All the many Fire tablets I've ever owned over the years have had
the standard headphone jack. However the new Fire Max 11 only has a
USB-C port which is used for both charging and audio. You would need
a headphone adapter to use it. They also have adapters that allow you to
listen and charge at the same time. (I had such an adapter for a Lenovo
tablet with only a USB port.) Course there's also Bluetooth listening. Unfortunately (IMO) headphone holes seem to be going the way of the

It's not just the resolution, though. The interpolation is much poorer on the 8-inch (deliberate or just lack of processing power?) making the displayed images much worse than the PPI difference would suggest.

For reading a Kindle takes a lot of beating and it is a more appropriate size. Perhaps that might be a more educational gift?

For reading a Kindle takes a lot of beating and it is a more appropriate size.

I haven't used a Kindle in years. About the only advantages are size and
battery length IMO. My reading includes color photos so black and white
didn't do it. Also if I wanted to stray off and check something the browser
    was horribly slow.

One thing I like about the Fire tablets is the holding comfort. They're
light, the plastic case is non slip with big rounded edges and wide bezels
I can put my fat thumbs on without doing something bad on the screen. In
contrast this Chrome tablet I'm posting with is heavier, has sharp corners,
narrow bezel, and it's metal case is cold. Unfortunately the new Fire Max
11 is that way too. That and no headphone jack stopped me from considering
    one...

Perhaps that might be a more educational gift?

It's a YMMV thing of course. I solved it by getting both. The tenner sits
permanently on my treadmill and the 8" is mostly for reading, like in the
    can... ;)

I found these sites which are said to have every book you ever could want. https://libgen.is/ & https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/

But there are many formats (epub, mobi, azw, azw3, pdf, docx, and more).

Dunno. I just used my Kindles for Amazon books.

Fire tablets run the Fire OS which is a fork of Android. They can be
easily side-loaded so can run most any Android app. Thus you can likely
run most any Android ereader you wish.

That was me but there was no conversion. I just side-loaded 4 Google
apps that made it run like a Google tablet including the Play Store but
the Amazon side still worked as before...

Another question about Samsung Galaxy 10.4" Tab S6 Lite non-LTE model is whether or not it has a GPS chip. It appears to have that capability.

On Android tablets with a GPS chip you can use them for navigation with
stored maps and with other applications that require GPS capability. The
Wi-Fi only iPads don't have a GPS which is a problem for some apps. I
always advised people to buy the LTE version of the iPad, even if they
were not going to sign up for mobile data, because they would get the
GPS which is necessary if using the tablet as an off-line GPS navigation device.
